Re: [diesel_mercedes] I Blame National Geographic of the 1950's

My dad always had a Leica 35mm.  We've got boxes and boxes of slides of family & his work. Some b&w, some in much later years are in color!

No reason you can't dream. You never know what you might come across.  I worked with a woman back in the mid 80's that drove a boat of a MB. I said "That's my next car". So it wasn't exactly my next car, but I do have one now! :)

Don't get me started on the pictures of the Zenith Transoceanic radio's or all those great Leica 35mm.

I should have been more focused on the pictures of jungle life in Africa.

[diesel_mercedes] picture of a/c drain hose posted

I just posted a picture of the a/c drain hose I removed from my 84 300sd. Foam corrodes, water goes down panel, under electric channel, into rear seat footwell.$20 part about 2 hours to remove panels and replace.

[diesel_mercedes] answer to what was buzzing

The electric switch over valve is the part that was buzzing on my 300sd.
If if remove the line at the top and put my finger on the opening, the noise stops. must be a vacuum issue. I may try to change the lines to see if it is a leak at the connection. there is a picture of the diagram of the vacuum system just posted in the album 1984 300sd. The part is number 33.11 in the diagram.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: It is alive!

Ben, you could also try to run it without the thermostat in it. See if that makes a difference. I think you can do that, someone will correct me if I am wrong.

If I run with the defrost on HIGH and heat on MAX, the car will hover around 100C. As soon as I turn off the defrost (because I'm boiling), the temp starts to climb. Then I chicken out, crank up the heat and it settles back to 100C.

Ben ;

Fist : CONGRATS ! .

I you look up " Citric Acid Coolant Flush " you'll find my DIY How-To , it's prolly also in the files section of the home page .

Be SURE to use ONLY distilled water , NOT tap water ! .

Allow it to work , drive it so it circulates well , I'd leave the windows down and the defrost on high to ensure it cleans the heater core too as the Mercedes heater core is a sediment trap .

Don't be too surprised if the mix turns dead black .

Or if it needs multiple cleanings before it stays clear distilled water for a day or 50 miles at the very least , then it's ready for the final dump and coolant fill .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Not So Frequently Asked Questions

# 1 : yes , unless you live where the pak brake has frozen on before , always use it before putting into park .

If the park brake cable ever freeze , remove them and clean well , soak in a clean drain pan with *just* enough new , undiluted antifreeze to cover them , overnight whilst sliding the cable center as far as it'l go back & forth a few times , will lubricate it for live and prevent freezing .

# 2 : This is fine as long as you don't exceed 800 ~ 900 RPM's . as soon as the oilpressure gauge pegs the upper limit you're ready to travel , longer warmup time is bad for the engine .

If this engine is loosey-goosey , use thinng oils so they get up out of the pan and circulatng faster a noisy rod upon initial startup is a dicy thing , carfull attentionto it should mke it last or tens of thousands of miles *but* it can also let go at any time .

# 3 : these are _NOT_ ' dumb questions ' !! .

On a cold start, i.e. hasn't run in more than "n" hours and the oil is fully drained and at ambient temp (i.e. "thick")...is it better to let it idle at whatever RPM is wants to idle at, (i.e. < 600RPM), or is it better to hold the accelerator just enough to quiet the "diesel rod knock" that accompanies the well worn but still strong engine? No more than 800-900 RPM until I'm reasonably sure things are "moving smoothly"?
