RE: [diesel_mercedes] How long do Bilstein HDs usually last

I have had KYB's on my 220D since 2001 – no issues.  However I had Bilsteins

on my BMW 2002 for 8 years while I owned it and no issues with them either.

How are the a arm bushings on yours?  That affects shock performance too.

I dunno Rob ;

I think I have one set of fronts getting a bit soft after who knows how long it's been , I installed them when first I bought my '84 Diesel Sports Coupe .

I have hammered the poor thing as hard & fast as it'll go over many , many twisty bad roads , I assume you bought the HD versions ? .

It looks like my Bilstien HD shocks I bought for my Mercedes 300D '85
have given up the ghost.
What is the deal with the Bilstien warranty?

The front end is all soft and handles poorly now. Pressing on the hood,
it seems like the shocks are toast. I installed them in Nov 2008.

It's been a few years, yet I thought that they'd last longer.

Thanks

[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Economy Check '84 300CD Automatic

NO AC use as it stopped working last Fall (maybe last Summer)  .

424 miles , Startron added , 24.1 MPG .

I really need to do that turbo but I have two cars apart for major repairs and I only have two runners now so I don't want to take it apart just yet....

It's been a MONTH since I ordered up a gallon of Startron from West marine , they keep giving me excuses why it's not here yet , this is BULLSHIT .

Yes , my fuel intake screen is still black(ish) . not as dark as it used to be but DAMN ! I can't get the fungus out of this car .

[diesel_mercedes] D-Jet FUN (?)

Hey ;

That's great Mike ! .

I hope you've taken the time to also replace the fuel filter and EVERY BIT of the flexible fuel hoses the car is full of ? .

Even the short hose bits on each and every injector ! you'll have to cut away the crimped collars on a few of the hoses (ALL of the injectors)  and buy some new , CORRECT band typ fuel hose clamps (IIRC the correct hose is 7 MM ID) , this takes a lot of labor but failure to do so will CAUSE A HORRIBLE FUEL FIRE ! .

I am not kidding here ~ I used to tell my D-Jet Customers to do this every two years and a few always didn't want to bother , the cars caught on fire and were mostly beyond economical repair so think hard before you skip this .

[diesel_mercedes] D-Jetronic Fuel Pumps

Just so ;

When I bought that POC Euro Spec 1975 350SLC in Nevada , I got it running to drive it home then the fuel pump packed it in an hour or so before sunset....

Luckily for me , the FLAPS nearby didn't have the correct one in stock but , the nice lady Manager allowed me to gently and carefully open boxes until I found one that had the same size hose nipples and pressure (32 ~ 34 PSI)  , I bought it , installed it dangling loosely , held by tie straps and drove the car home in the POURING RAIN , found a good one on an W-116 S - Klasse in the Junk Yard a few weeks later .

That dang pump was $125 IIRC and I still have it in the box in my garage , I don't know what I'll -ever- do with it but it got me home .

Then of course , the MAP sensor died , it's "maybe" available from Mercedes $800 (GASP) , I was off to look for more D-Jet equipped W-116's , then the dizzy's F.I. contact trigger points died , then , oh crap it was awful but D-jet cars always are when they go kaputi .

At least it was a total hoot to drive with the stick shift and all ~ I drove it on one of the very last No Frills Iron Bottom Motoring Tours and very nearly flew off a mountain road with it , that's when I decided to sell it before I got arrested or killed in it .

Wow!  That's great!  The last time I had to get a vane-type fuel pump for a Mercedes they were ten-times those prices from my wholesaler.  List was over $550!  But, then again, there was no ebay 30-years ago....

I know of more than one W108 chassis car in decent, not perfect, but not bad condition, that were scrapped for want of an expensive fuel pump.
