Hit a junk yard today; Twin Lakes on 310, not a PAP. They had ONE MB like mine but it was already crushed with a car under it and several on top! We did manage to get a cable & fog light for $20.
Where is the pap you use located?
Last week we went over off of Second Ave to LKQ aka Atomic.
Do they have MBZ's with parts still attached?
They had several cars with some parts. Depends on what year you're looking for.
There was another guy "TJ" we found on Craigs List, off of Lake June Rd & 635, that had a car lot with several MBZ on it. Some were parts cars, some were for sale, the ONE I liked of course wasn't for sale!

[diesel_mercedes] Tool-fest at Sears...I'm gearing up!
Turns out Sears was having a big ole sale this week (ends tomorrow) and I had xmas cash in my wallet. As some of you have figured out by now, I'm SO new at this, I barely even have basic tools...been borrowing a friend's "basic mechanic's tool" set for a while, but he needed it back. I used to have tools, but long ago in Boston someone busted into my car and took 'em.
So I snagged me a 194-pc craftsman set, and rounded out with a few ultra basics like a 4-pack of different pliers (I need my own dikes, ya know!) and a plain jane utility knife. I also picked up a 22mm combo wrench so I can get to my darn valve adjustment!!!
We've had some warmer weather here...40's (even 50+ yesterday)...but I've been working (yay work!) a lot this week...tomorrow might be the day!
I'll also check the one (????) pawn shop in Santa Fe for other tools...I still need a vacuum pump (tho they have those to loan at the McParts places), torque wrench (same), and I'm hoping to take some of my xmas cash to PaPs here and in ABQ (which I've heard, have MBZ's that have been barely picked!). Bet the pawn shops are better there too ;)
Valve adjustment....here I come. (Can you tell I am psyching myself up?)

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Antenna Switch
It is used to set the electric antenna to fully extended , 1/2 extended or retracted when you're using the tape deck .
In general you don't touch it .

[diesel_mercedes] New year , Old Car......
Oh well ;
I got the exhaust hangers all done up nicely and then discovered the 240D's intake manifold is dead , this means the aluminum air cleaner can I spent so much time finding , is cracked and ruined....
Tom gets back next year , if anyone has or finds (Brian ?) a 240D please let me know and I'll buy the intake manifold & air cleaner off it , filthy greasy is fine , just not corroded nor cracked .
I don't need the round lid either .
THANKS ! .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Re : Control Pressure Rod Too Long?
trish, would appreciate an update on PAP. Where is the pap you use located? Do they have MBZ's with parts still attached? I tried one in Grand Prairie and they had nothing but empty shells. I might be willing to drive down there if the inventory is worth it.
Thanks,
Chuck

Yesterday was 1982 240D service day , after only 328,000 + miles , all four shocks were plumb wore out ~ even SWMBO (who's car it is) had begun to complain about how bouncy it is .
The interesting thing is : you need to remove the entire back seat to access the upper rear shock mounts , they're hidden behind white plastic body plugs so if you don't start by removing the rear seat , your interior is going to get grubby when you touch the nice upholstery after getting road grime & brake dust all over your hands.....
Removing the wheels is necessary in front , removing the rear wheels allows you to adjust the park brake , inspect the brake pads & wash all four wheels & hubcaps (If so equipped) , they'll be nice and dry by the time you re install them after replacing the shocks .
I use Bilstein HD shocks and no , they do not make the car ride harshly ~ the car once again rides like it's new (I replaced the ball joints a couple years ago) again , SWMBO loves it .
Using Monroe , Gabriel , _grey_ KYB or other off the shelf shocks is a serious wa$te of your hard earned $ , you have been warned .
When the rear seat is out , you'll find lots of crumbled horsehair padding from the seat cusions , take the time to vacuum it all out , the Garage Mechanic won't although he'll crertainly grab all the loose change , iPods and other assorted crap that's there .
It's about a two and 1/2 hour job to do all four shocks , remvoing the upper nuts whilst the suspension is still loaded makes the jog much easier and you'll need a 12 point , 3/8" drive 10M socket to make the front lower shock bolts come out in 30 seconds rather than struggling with a box end wrench ......
As I was undernesth the car I noticed that two of the rubber exhaust hanger donuts had parted so I ordered up a full set of four W-107
" lifetime " exhaust hangers donuts and will instal them to - day along with yet another set of rubber air cleaner can mounts .
I posted the Lifetime hanger P/N in the files section but will re post it here to - night or soon as I have the package in hand , if anyone wants .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: What about the starter?
Does the turbo engine require different cable routing, to get past the changed exhaust system?
YES!

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Re : Control Pressure Rod Too Long?
Good Morning Mark,
Kevin can't remember at this point if it had a control rod. We swapped it with Mark, waiting for a response when he gets a chance to look at it.
study those diagrams, then bend or cut and reweld the 116 control rod to make it work.
That's exactly what Kevin was thinking of doing.
> Really, the original control rod from your car, along with most of the rest of your original throttle linkage, SHOULD have been the basis from which to have set this all up.
Oh well, another lesson learned. I traded the trans off at the same time I picked up the turbo motor/trans. No big deal. We're headed to the PAP today while it's nice, then over to the shop to work for a few hours.

[diesel_mercedes] antenna / radio help 123 1985 300d
Bought the car with no radio / installed after market...all good.
What, in the orignal state of the car, was the antenna switch's job? Did the antenna raise with radio power? Did the switch have to be used?
What did the large black wire from the switch run to?
I am probably looking at an antenna motor problem too...how do you get at it?
THANKS!!
