Mary, put the word out to the indy shops in the bay area that you are interested in that type of car. When I was on the peninsula, our mechanic found a great car for my mother in law, which I am now driving. The mech usually know the great cars, and can match you with a seller. The mech was MB Garage in San Mateo, not sure if Larry is still there. But you can also try the autohauses in Burlingame and Redwood City. There are usually good cars on the peninsula.

Neither of us are mechanically inclined, so we will have our resident diesel head/old Mercedes mechanic check out any 300TD wagon we find just to ensure the vehicle is in god shape. I know the SLS is sometimes worn out in the old wagons. Anything else to look out for besides rust? Man, these W123s are wicked comfy for road trips. Is that because they were designed for "luxury" or??? Anyhow,. have to wait til next year when the Toyota is paid off to look at 300TDs.

We are definitely sold on the idea of getting a W123 Wagon in the future(gonna trade in our Toyota Rav4 once it is paid off in April of next year and we find a good 300TD wagon). I drive the Rav4 3 hours and am stiff for hours, drive the 300D for 7 hours and get out as if I just got in. We journeyed from Silicon Valley area (Fremont) of California, up thru Dunsmuir (CA) to Bend (OR), thru Eastern Oregon & Washington up to a friend's place 40 minutes north of Wenatchee (WA), then back down, thru the Columbia River Gorge to Portland (OR) for a visit with my daughter and her Hubby, back to Dunsmuir, then home. No pics on Portland, as it was super rainy but good food was had by all and everyone but me (designated driver) had good beer. BTW, Dunsmuir has amazing gourmet food and excellent microbrews at the Dunsmuir Brewery an Pub. The German Dog (Levi) loves his German car as much as we do. Mercedes sure does know how to make an awesome road trip vehicle. Anyone in the Bay Area want to rent me their 300TD for a return trip in September? Pics are under album Mary's Road Trip 2011. I get cold easily, so I am wearing about 3 layers of clothing:)

She does ! .
As long as _SHE_ is paying for it .
These fine & fun cars have a bit of a reputation for bad electrics after a few hard years so make sure _EVERYTHING_ electrical works , not just the top .
Lights , _EVERY(DANG)THING_ ! .
If he buys her one , he deserves the drubbing he'll surely get .

[diesel_mercedes] Buying A 300TD
! YES ! .
In addition to making _CERTAIN_ YOU personally look under the car (I use indie Muffler Shops , they'll usually be free or $5 to hoist it up as long as you want) for rust holes & bubbles , be sure to pay close attention to the dashboard heater controls ! vertical row of 5 buttons means $$ !! hassles ! headaches ! no heat ! no AC ! round dial heater controls is good , a horizontal row of buttons is O.K. too .
Don't worry about the turbo , it's not that important , many 300TD's don't have them regardless of year model because these uber popular wagons were direct imported often and most Direct Imports didn't have the turbocharger .
The SLS system is a bit of a PIA but parts are available , if it's dead , (rear end sags down) expect to dump in $1,500 to fix it right and then it's _done_ , annual fluid & filter change & forget about it , except when you're jammed full of stuff and the car doesn't even notice..... =8-) (it's a wonderful system) if you're Mechanic like to tinker , the ofter dead SLS control valve can be taken apart and rebuilt , more $ in labor than parts .
_ALL_ 30 year old vehicles are by nature , ' fixer uppers ' ~ the trick is to buy one in good shape you can begin driving NOW and sort out the niggly little things during routine servicing .
Keep looking ! I love the one I found for SWMBO , it needed some things (paint mostly) but has been worth every penny I've invested so far .
I hope this helps , I can go on but this is maybe too long already .

I know the M104 is a good engine.However with a supercharger it can't have much boost.Unless stronger rods were used. --- On Tue, 4/19/11, max_stemple <max_stemple@yahoo.com> wrote:
