Thanks for taking time to look this up. All of the estimates are at least $500 over my quote....but then what good is a quote when it is just a quote.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Heater box?
I get hot air out of the defrost and front vents regardless off settings. There's apparently some vacuum issues but when vacuum is applied from an external source the blend doors don't move and they're stuck at full heat. I just got the car recently and there are a few questionable "repairs" to figure out. My mech says he's never seen a heater box go bad but warned that it was sold as a rather pricey entire assembly. We still have a lot of diagnosis to go through but trying to stay ahead of the curve in the event of a worst case scenario.

Sounds like a lot of money to me. Have you tried UShip? At least the
people bidding for your business have intentions to deliver, or they
will get bad reviews, etc. And they bid on the job, you don't have to
waste time searching all over...

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Heater box?
Ironically enough, my 84 300 SD is having it's climate control guts opened up and serviced this week, possibly for the exact same "locked up" behavior. The louvers/flaps that are part of the system that mixes hot and cold air are vacuum servo driven and were definitely contributing to my vacuum leakage problems. First and foremost, this time tomorrow, for the first time in this car since I rehabilitated her 18 months ago, I should have full/new vacuum on the brake booster circuit and no fade to hard pedal in heavy traffic or downhill mountain roads (thank goodness!). We'll see how well they get the climate control under control - last time, the local Benz specialist only went partway into the climate control problems (my call at the time) and last winter I had heat on the pax side, but not driver. AC and fresh air vents worked well enough. Most ironic, I finally found the properly experienced Mercedes diesel mechanic I've been looking for over the last 2 years lurking at a BMW specialist.
You don't even want to know the size of the bill for all of above...(+ a steering wheel/horn re-assembly (mine exploded last week) + complete front L/R brakes/pads/rotors) and some rear suspension fiddly bits I overlooked on the re-fit and was advised needed replacement after 200kmi..

To -day I skipped work and tinkered on my two Coupes , getting the red one ready for it's fire sale give away by swapping out misc. parts so the bath I take will only be $5,000.00 or so .
I'm well pleased with the Euro headlights & bumpers in my keeper Coupe , the seller Coupe is running fine and in fact _bolts_ from a dead stop better than does my turbo Coupe , I'll miss it and hopefully the next owner will enjoy & take good care of it .
However , as I was driving to SWMBO's place for a nap , window down , elbow in the hot breeze & the AC cranked up as cold as it'll go , radio playing old Rock & Roll tunes I pondered : who'll give a rat's patoot about an old Mercedes Diesel Coupe after I've assumed room temperature ? . no one I'm betting .
That's kinda sad as I've put a lot of hard work and no small amount of ca$h into this old car , as it is fast approaching the zenith of Automotive perfection for this old geezer .
I think I'll go take a nap .

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Bosch Injector Service
The deal is this : when they rebuild them , they just grab loose body parts out of a barrel , willy-nilly , then they shim & test them to suit the particular application . if BOSCH does the rebuilding , they have these nifty plastic bands that are both color coded and stamped with the rebuilt P/N , I don't like this .
As you're missing heat shields , I'm betting some goof just grabbed a handful of used injectors & slapped 'em on in , when you get it sorted to have 5 injectors that pop off at the same pressure (or within 10 #) and have nice fine conical mist spray patterns , your OM617 is going to suddenly have much more giddy-ap & git to it .
The fun you're having now is why I never , _EVER_ trust anyone or anything to have been done right .

[diesel_mercedes] Awakening the 300SD
Car is dead until I get a "new" transmission line from PnP. Meantime lots o leakage from the injector return lines, I got a meter of the stuff from Rusty and set about replacing the lot. Found an injector finger tight, so I pulled the fuel manifold and all the old return lines, and pulled out all the injectors to see how they were doing, never having done this since I installed the used engine, 10 or so years ago. Surprise!
#1 Injector: KCA30S35/4 242 115 Bar. No heat sink.
#2 Injector: KCA30S35/4 342 135 Bar, No heat sink.
#3 Injector: KCA30S35/4 342 135 Bar. Heat sink
#4 Injector: KCA30S35/4 342 135 Bar. No heat sink
#5 injector KCA30S46 444 135 Bar. No heat sink
All but number 5 seemed to seal with or without heat sinks, #5 not screwed all the way in, lots o carbon built up where the heat sink should have been.
Anybody know which of these injector is the right one? Can't find a word anywhere about markings on Bosch fuel injectors.
