RE: [diesel_mercedes] Alternator

The mounting bracket on the block has bushings, those could be worn out and should be replaced. The alternator will tend to move around

and affects belt life too.  Think it is a 10mm hex on the bolts.

As an FYI, get the alternator from a MB parts dealer. I used A&F in Oakland, Ca., before they sold out their parts business The rebuilds are better quality – replace the belt as well.  Take the alternator

to a shop and have it tested.  Heck Oriellys does that too.

The adjustment on the alternator is slick.  Those MB engineers had a

great idea.

I am having trouble understanding this. Hope you can help. I have a 1984 300D with a bad alternator. I have been working on cars for 40 years. The car has the 65 amp bosch version.

When removing the alternator, how are you suppose to remove the adjuster bolt. I removed the through bolt, loosened the adjuster bolt, and moved the adjuster so the alternator was closest to the engine block and belts fell off.  But how are you suppose to remove the adjusting bolt. I had to bend the mounting bracket to free the adjuster rod, then it barely cleared getting it out anyway. Is that how it is done? Seems like a pain in the rear. First time I actually cussed German engineering. Did I miss something?

Once the alternator was on the ground, I was still confused.  The 65amp rebuilt one I got from O'Reileys had me scratching my head some more. What is the little rectangular gizmo attached to the back of the alternator with one wire going into the rear of the alternator. Looks like a resistor. Can't find a new one. I think it said Faccon 2202 or something like that. Thought we had a picture of it but can not find it now.

When looking at the old alternator, I removed the voltage regulator and the brushes were wore down. Made me wonder if the alternator was fine, just the regulator was shot. Can it be tested off the car? How do you know? Can a voltage regulator be purchased separately? I have not been able to locate on online.  I do not mind dropping $140 but if I do not have to, that is a bonus.

When we originally tested the alternator, voltage would not increase at battery when motor was reved past 2K. Thought that indicated alternator. That is why it is off the car now.

thanks, nick

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Alternator

I would bet dollars to donuts that the regulator was the problem. Mine has failed three times in the 10 years I have owned it and it has always been the brushes in the regulator. A local auto electric shop got me some new brushes that fit and cost a buck apiece. I got 4 spares plus the two I needed to repair my regulator. I have 2 spare regulators and I have been using the same set of regulator/brushes assemblies for over 10 years as they also fit my 75 300d I got in 2001. I just replace the brushes when they fail.

Oh yeah, that thingy with the wire is a filtering capacitor.

Next time you are at a PAP yard pull a regulator, if not the whole alternator, and keep it as a spare. If you can solder, then the brushes are relatively easy to replace.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Parts Car

I could use a transmission shift arm - the one that mounts to the transmission selector shaft, and operates the neutral safety/backup light switch. But my application is a 4 bolt tranny from a pre 81 300d. If they cross fit I would be interested.
Does anyone know if that is the case?

Nate,

I just tanked up my 83 240D w/4 speed manual. Easy driving, no A/C (doesn't work), 70% surface streets, 30% highway.

Miles:  1022.9
Fuel:  28.881 gallons
MPG:  35.418
Cost:  $3.539/gallon

I was avoiding filling it up because of the clogged vent. I realized that I could leave the cap loose, but fuel would come out if it was too high. So this morning I took card of the vent and do went and filled it up (at my local Home Depot).

I've been keeping track of distance and fuel since I bought the car in February 10th this year. I've driven just over 8000 miles and averaged 35.3mpg.  But then I drive like an old lady twice my age. :-)

Re: [diesel_mercedes] 83 240D Fuel Economy

Mark,

The speedometer and odometer are broken, so I'm not sure. Odo reads 137k, but knowing the previous owner, I'd estimate 150-160k now.

My mileage figures are based on my GPS unit. That's also how I know how fast (or slowly) I'm driving!
