Thanks Bill! Should have thought of that first to be sure....this is almost certainly the problem and makes perfect sense. Have dispatched the web link to my son in FL who will (hopefully) confirm and we can get started on fixing it.

Car in question is 1984 300 SD - vibration is only in the shift lever, not transmission. Engine mounts, flex discs, all those components renewed within last 25K mi.
