[diesel_mercedes] Progress

I went home after work and experimented raising the OM671 engine up by it's left side  using a narrow block of wood underneath the AC compressor bracket .

I lifted the wood with my hydraulic trolley jack .

The first time I think I might have raised it too high as the wood popped out , luckily before I had my hands in there.....

The second time I was able to get both new hoses tucked in and lightly screwed to the oil filter housing , then i re mounted the left side motor mount to the unibody and spent some time trying to wiggle the alloy support arm in there , it simply wouldn't fit so I disconnected the power steering return hose from the steering box , made a bit of a mess and was able to get the arm nearly in place ~ in time , by shoving the engine to the right with one hand I was able to get the support arm started over it's four 10MM studs but the sheet metal mount protector fell out and I flagged before I was able to jockey the engine high enough to slip it back in , the light was going so I stopped for the day but I made some progress and that's a good thing .

Same story - you have to download it and then open it with Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you run into trouble, let me know and we can work something out I'm sure.

I can't open them directly either. You have download them first and then open them with Adobe Acrobat Reader (at least that is what I use).

[diesel_mercedes] Replacing W126 door

T'was I Brian ;

When I click that hyperlink, it opens this exact page/comment again.... no PDF file .

Tom's '81 300SD got backed into whilst I was working on the open passenger sided door in the street , my legs underneath the car , I nearly pissed my self think I was about to become a statistic like so many I've seen in the last 5 Decades .

Anyways , the guy was ice and his Insurance paid out , I found another 1981 300SD in the same original color (helps with shade matching) , took it to Tom's man cave and cleaner , polished and waxed it , it still sits there awaiting him to allow me to install it...

I'd love that PDF file .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Cold Weather Starting Drill

Sub zero? Celsius? In the manual for my 1959 190D it stated you could add about 40% gasoline to the fuel for a winter mix, I never did it tho, we have winterized diesel,which used to be a 50/50 blend of #2 diesel and #1 stove oil, it also stated "It is generally impossible to start the car at temps below 20 degrees F". Thats 20 above zero. Good thing these cars start easier. Tho I would not even attempt to start my 240's at anything even close to zero unless they were plugged in or unless I was in trouble. Max  P.S. back in the 70's and 80's it would get to -20F every single winter here, -30 once,now it barely hits zero , still cold for diesel tho.

O.K. ;

It's in the owners manual :

Depress and release the throttle several times then cycle the glow plugs twice , waiting for the light to go out before the second cycle and again before you operate the starter .

Never , EVER operate the starter when the glow plug warning lamp is lit .

Once you begin to crank the engine , hold the throttle to the floor and as the engine begins to cough and try to start , do not let off the throttle nor the key until it's running on all five cylinders (four if you own a 240D) ~ once it has started and is revving up , you may ease off the throttle *just* enough to keep the engine from racing .

Adding any of the commercially available Winter Diesel fuel additives helps a great deal too .

You're already using thin oil , that's important as it helps the engine crank easier in extreme cold weather .

It takes a bit of practice but once it lights off in the sub zero temps you'll gain confidence .

If possible , adding a coolant heater to the lower radiator hose or any sore of radiating heat under the engine or even under the hood will also help ..

IIRC you already did the routine valve adjustment , that's probably the # 1 thing to help cold starting any time of year .

If the voltage regulator on the back of the alternator doesn't say ' BOSCH ' on it, you're never going to have a properly charged battery , I know this is the hell of a time of year to change it but it really does make a large difference in battery charging and available power for cold starting .

None of this is difficult but ALL of it is very important as you're using 1940's Technology and it requieres a certain amount of finesse that modern vehicles don't . the rewards are many , the frustrations can be great if you don't follow the steps and pay close attention to what your particular 35 year old Mercedes wants and needs .

Nate, I did do a search for how to do this, and all involve pre-heating of some sort (heat air, oil, coolant etc),and I just improvised on what I thought would be helpful with what I had. I really liked the idea on draining about 2 quarts oil from the oil pan, heating it and putting it back - not something one wants to do everytime though.

I do not recall seeing any procedure/drill specifically listed by MB. If you have it or know where I can find it, please let me know. Tia.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Fuel Economy Check '82 240D Automatic

I'm hoping that by this time next year, I'll have my solar in, and then I'll get a (by then very cheap) electric car, probably a 2013 or later Leaf for $5000 or less.  It's perfect for the around-the-town driving we do here.  My wife puts less than 400 miles a month on her Prius, which we'll keep as the trip car.

(Someday, I'll build by steam-electric....)

Great news Lawrence!!! As soon as they get the range over 250 miles,
I'll be with you. The new lower priced Tesla sounds promising.

Didn't know you lived in Lodi. My Aunt lived there for over 50 years.
Are you still gigging??

Well Stan that is what my brother says and whey Tesla meet that the estimate whet up to 500 miles. But with just the 84 mile range I was able to go to LA last week. Drive from Lodi in one charge. It's also not the range but the charging time that is the real problem. If you could charge in 10 minutes then few people would complain. Currently my quick charges are 45 minutes and that gets you up to 92 or 93 percent. It took me with huge mistakes 24 hours to get from San Francisco to LA. But once there I had my ride. During my stay Disney Hall & the LA Water Dept. gave me free charges. On the way back I spent 20 dollars and 19 hours. I'm willing to put up with the extra time because I don't have to spend much time maintaining my car anymore...add that into the mix. So what I'm giving up in convenience is made up with time savings and cost savings in other places. So enjoy the low fuel price foreplay now because baby give it time and bend over and take that big 10 buck a gallon love stick from the oil companies. That is the train I'm getting off and I love it. My car is right for my mission and the slight inconvenience I face is nothing compared to 10 dollar fuel...and it's coming. I'm still going to build my solar car. A lot of you could get off gas or diesel...or veggie oil. You just have to plan ahead. I bet all of you could go electric for one car. Try it. You'll like it. Lawrence Rhodes
