may be available. Rust is a cancer that is hard to stop. If you have
some areas that are rusted through, you probably have thin metal in many
places. Don't be delicate trying to save a paper thin area. You will
need to remove back to solid metal.
I wouldn't support any floorpan with something that would snap in an
accident. The support for the new metal should be strong enough to hold
and deform the new metal.
3M does sell autobody adhesives. I would add pop rivets to it if you
can't get tack welds.
I use Fluid Film for all my cars/trucks. I am working on a cold water
rinsing system for the driveway to rinse off the salt after I get home.

Take a good survey of the damage and look around to see what other cars
may be available. Rust is a cancer that is hard to stop. If you have

RE: [diesel_mercedes] Floor Boards, Frame, and Rust on 71 220D
Does it have to be welded or can quicksteel or jb weld do it? Also does anyone know what kind of frame I have because I would like to put the jack under the frame as the metal is too weak in the typical jacking point.
Thanks again.

RE: [diesel_mercedes] Floor Boards, Frame, and Rust on 71 220D
To stop floorboard rust, you cut out the floorboard back to solid metal. Then weld in a new piece of similar gauged metal.
If the frame only has surface rust it can be cleaned and rust-proofed.
Try googling for videos of these solutions on youtube. Bill in

There are now holes in every floor and rust underneath. The floors are starting to drop. I didn't realize the problem was this extensive.
Will rustbullet or something like that stop rust on the frame?
Are there any self-adhesive floor boards out there?
Any thoughts are appreciated.

[diesel_mercedes] Dim INSTRUMENT CLUSTER LIGHTING
Yes Bogy ;
The light waves are passed by clean platic light guides and they get all dusty and dirty over the years .
Take the entire dashboard binnacle out and apart , clean every inch of it and then carefully hand polish the inside of the clear plastic cover with Meguiar's Plastic Polish (Pep Boys , O'Reilly's AutoZone etc.) using lens tissue or Scott's plain white TP and you'll be well pleased at how bright they get .
Never blindingly bright but plenty good enough to see at night .
I need to do this on my Coupe as the entire car filled up with Diesel Smoke the day I bought it .
While it's apart you can solder a by pass jumper wire to the dash dimmer rheostat or buy a new one if you're pickier than I am .
So far I've had mixed results cleaning the original rheostats .

I decided to try to do something about the annoyingly dim panel lighting in my 300TD. To that end I got a couple of light sockets and "wired up" some super bright LEDs. I tested them on the workbench at 12 volts (regulated) and almost blinded myself. But when I put them in the sockets of the instrument cluster they were almost as dim as the warm glow normal lights. I took them back out and powered both a normal light and the LED light simultaneously with the same supply. I couldn't believe how bright the normal lights actually were. Which makes me ask myself - "What's up here?" It's too late and rainy to do any more investigating tonight. But does anyone know if there is a filter or light limiting apperature and maybe a diffuser between the bulb and the light outlet port at the top of the cluster? I don't believe there is any reason other than that to account for how dim these bulbs seem to be. I will also post the photos of the final product. I'm kinda proud of them. Look in the photo section in folder called
"bogy's LED intrument cluster lights"

I seem to remember an article on the tube that channels the light from the bulb. Maybe it was a Mercedes Source video, yes it was now that I think about it. He may have cleaned the tube or lined it with aluminum foil or something to get some brightness. Let us know how you solve it.

Hate to tell all you young pipsqueaks this, but I remember when FDR died and Packards ruled alongside Hudson Hornets and Studebakers.
