[diesel_mercedes] Re: Re : Tools & Mechanics

A story about a metric wrench I borrowed in 1976. I needed a wrench I think it was a 15 mm, to take the starter motor off my inboard sailboat motor, borrowed one from the company next door to where I worked. It was a brand name wrench.
With my butt in the air, my ear on the valve cover and my hands at the starter, I could get the wrench onto the bolt head, but the wrench was too long to move. Easy I cut the end off. Now I could move the bolt, but not enough to pick up the next points, because the wrench was too fat to clear the engine mount. So our hero ground off about 1/3 the thickness 2 inches long. Still would not quite get one point on the bolt head, so ground off a 1/2" dip just behind the box end. still was having trouble getting the wrench on the bolt because there was a bit of starter casting in the way. So our hero ground down the box end so it was thinner. Got the starter off, took the starter in to the company that had loaned me the wrench, as they were going to sell me a new one. I kept that wrench for years until all my tools got stolen one night.
Shoulda seen the shocked look on the wrench owners face when i handed him the wrench. Every one in the room was rolling on the floor laughing. I asked him if he wanted me to go and buy him another, he grinned and took the money instead.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: 300TD Taillight Lenses

Lots of lenses & assemblies in the PAP's. I think I have several w123 and w126 assemblies in my trunk (or boot if you prefer).

I was able to reach into the lens through the bulb hole with an acid brush and swirl around some liquid plastic cleaner and remove _all_ the spooge and Diesel Smoot but the lens had cracks that pi$$ed me off and then the paint shop broke the clips so I tossed out both taillight lenses and bought new ones ~ good guy price was : $200.00 EACH (! GASP !) .

Good thing SWMBO likes the car as I've put waaayyy too much Lolly into it and if I touch it , I'll make it into my Shop Truck and ruin it...

I'd give cleaning yours another shot , use Meguiar's # 40 Plastic Cleaner , it's _amazing_ stuff .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Pre Dawn Fun

As a 16 year old, I had the family 1950 straight 8 pontiac up to 110 mph when that freeway opened, late at night when the black & whites were sleeping.

I slide onto the nearly deserted I-110 Harbor freeway @ 0-Dark:30 already going 65 and acelerating , by the time it reaches 85MPH the exhaust (no muffler) is just *humming* that sweet sweet sound........

DANG I love this old car .

Just so Max ;

My experiance has been it's a slippery slope : I borrow a tool and of course return it cleaner than borrowed , then later on that same person wants to borrow my tools and says " why not ? I loaned you mie..."

[diesel_mercedes] Trying to make right wide angle mirror.

I was trying to make the stock W123 right side mirror into a wide angle one by
getting the mirror hanger parts but I found an old new stock version. Turns out
there are factory wide angle mirrors out there. I got mine at
http://www.a-and-f.com/ In Oakland, CA. Walked in asking for a broken mirror
and the manager said he had a bunch he'd had for at least 15 years. Cost me
under 100 dollars. He's happy to get rid or them and I bet some of you have
been looking for a right side mirror.
http://www.a-and-f.com/Order/OrderForm.aspx?provider=&mode=search&quick= If you
call them I bet he'll reduce the price. I was happy just to get one. Lawrence

[diesel_mercedes] 300TD water damage to driver side rear light.

I had standing water in my driver side rear corner light set. The bottom two
sockets were corroded badly. It was also dimmer. I took apart the bulb holder
and wire brushed it. It's now reliable but the running light is still dim & the
brake light is a bit dull. I washed the plastic out but the right side is clear
and bright while my running light is dull. It seems there is no way to take
these apart. I'd love to get in there with a brush of some sort. Lots of rust
which must have left a coating in there. I may try that motorcycle cleaner
