Subject: [diesel_mercedes] Smoke
I'm not a drooler in a ruined pickup truck ~ I don't want any smoke , EVER .
The odd thing is ; it's not always there .
I drove it a couple hundred miles to - day and sometimes I could see smoke , others not .
I got home shortly before sundown and took the '82 240D's driver's side door apart , replaced the window lift with a new one from Eckler's ~ it wasn't properly greased from the factory so I shot it with white lithium grease from a foo-foo can before installing it .
I'm not impressed with the quality of it although it seems to work just fine ~ the lift is made of stamped sheet metal and the stampings are ever so slightly changed to make them easier and cheaper to manufacture , one of the four 6 MM screw holes had bad threads and stripped as I tried to tighten it ~ luckily I was able to simply add a 6 MM ATF nut to the back side and tighten it well .
We'll see if this lift lasts long or not ~ the next original one I find , I'll grab and stash away .
At least the window now opens and closes again so I can move on , maybe begin fooling with IP timing this week .
We'll see .

I find that a good billowing "smoke" while entering freeway traffic tends to make space behind me as cars slow down assuming that I am blowing a valve.
