People keep insisting on living in the canyons and foothills - and guess what; that is where fires roar. The rest of us in the flat lands just watch and wonder.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Charging Lamp & Rate

Put in a new flaps alternator last year and just lately have noticed that the charging light stays on until I touch the loud pedal, so I guess that the alternator is not being energized until it hits a slightly higher rpm, only happens on the first start up of the day.

On another note, had the AC compressor replaced, get to pick up the car in the morning, They put in a new filter, expansion chamber and cleaned out all the plumbing, cost 4500 pesos, about $400.

Just do not like driving at highway speeds with windows down, too noisy and uncomfortable.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] SoCal weather

Yes, it's been warm and dry down here.
I'm glad my AC works.

Even though there's a few things I need to work on for the MB, I plan to
check out a few Volvo 240s for my wife.
We had a friend say that they had a newer Volvo they were going to sell,
a XC70, yet my indy guy said don't buy one, they're junk. Just as with
our old MBs, they don't make them like that anymore.

I have found that working glow plugs make a huge difference in starting a diesel.  Sometimes just a little more time is needed.  You can do this with double starts which means running two start cycles.  Another method which on one car became the normal method was to put in a manual glow plug switch in.  This includes a simple automotive relay you can buy at a parts store for under 10 dollars or take one from under the hood of just about any car in a junk yard.  Very simple.   Two connections of the four or 5 terminals are the activation circuit.  Two others(usually the big ones) carry the current to the glow plug circuit.(a circuit in electrical terms can be as simple as a battery, switch and light bulb with wires connecting them together.) You hook a direct connection from your battery to a fuse, then the relay, from the relay splice into the glow plug circuit.  Then you have to connect the activation circuit using a momentary switch.  I found the pin in the circuit that activates the glow plug light so when I push the switch the glow plug light illuminates.  I believe I have documented this somewhere on the this lists website so  look for the pictures if you are interested in this modification.  I count to 5 normally.  10 in winter.  Lawrence Rhodes.........

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Rust Causes

Thats exactly why if you live in snow country, do not park in a heated space. I've lived in snow country for 35 years now. Havent noticed any of my cars rusting. I do have killer water pressure from natural springs and I am always hosing off the mud during break-up. Max

Snow, by itself has nothing to do with car rusting. But if you drive where they dump chemicals for ice then that takes its toll. Adding the ground strap may just do the trick .

It certainly helped both Nate's on this list , increasing both charging voltage and cranking speeds .

I've got a brand new Bosch voltage regulator in there, it's probably got 100 miles on it.

I'm thinking of picking up one of those cigarette lighter voltmeters to see what it's doing.

I was surprised the battery ground goes to sheet metal and not the engine/tranny bell housing, I'll have to add a ground cable.

[diesel_mercedes] RE: Vac diagram/question w126

You have a big leak in the central locking system , I'd find the yellow plastic pipe under the hood where it connects to the other vacuum pipes , cap it off and plug the hole , see if this helps .

The next thing is to drop the left side dash board cover panel and find and replace the two 3" long rubber hoses at the back of the ign. switch , they connect to two brown plastic pipes and unless you personally changed them , I _guarantee_ they're leaking right now .

Then look at the back of the injection pump and locate the brown plastic pipe and short hose bit , replace it and you should have an engine that halts quickly .

The vacuum pumps do fail slowly but before touching it you *MUST* replace ALL those short bits of vacuum hose .

-Nate

       AJ Wrote :

I've known for some time that I've got a vac system issue in my 84 300SD..

The central locks don't "extactly" work..  The drivers door locks the trunk and fuel door..  Not the car doors..

On cold days (and when the engine is cold) the engine doesn't shut off with the key..  Locking the door doesn't shut the car off (as my old 240D did)-- but pressing the brake pedal does..  Pressing a different button on the hvac controller does, as well..  (Changing from defrost to vent, I think is what I did, yesterday..)

I've been having cold start issues-- I'm wondering if the pump doesn't have enough vacuum start?  Is that a possibility??

after the engine starts, even a second or two of runtime-- it's a non-issue..

The glow plug circuit has been interrogated to death-- and it's functional, the glows have all been ohm tested (with removal/replacement scheduled...)   It doesn't "ACT" like a glow plug issue..
