Say you're parked, and in neutral. Does the noise increase in frequency with engine speed? Could be a rod bearing.
A noise in the block tends to be hard to pinpoint. You can use a metal rod or tube, and listen at one end while touching the outside of the block with the other end.
They also make stethoscopes for auto noise tracing. Bill in Oregon

Subject: [diesel_mercedes] Ticking sound
Guys,
Our '85 300D recently started making a ticking sound, sort of like a valve noise. I know, not a good description, but not sure how else to say it. A month ago it was a very subtle noise, but now it has gotten much louder. It is especially prevalent during acceleration. It is not really noticeable at cruise or idle.
After the noise first started last month, my first inclination was to adjust the valves. I did that but it didn't help at all. So, has anybody else experienced this? I'm not sure what it is or what to do about it.
Thanks for the help!
Kevin
