Re: [diesel_mercedes] Ticking sound

Ticking / engine noises could be a symptom of:
Starting problems? Increases exhaust smoke?
Could be crud in the injection system and combustion chambers.
When did you last do a diesel purge?

A noise in the block tends to be hard to pinpoint. You can use a metal rod or tube, and listen at one end while touching the outside of the block with the other end.

Guys,

Our '85 300D recently started making a ticking sound, sort of like a valve noise. I know, not a good description, but not sure how else to say it. A month ago it was a very subtle noise, but now it has gotten much louder. It is especially prevalent during acceleration. It is not really noticeable at cruise or idle.

After the noise first started last month, my first inclination was to adjust the valves. I did that but it didn't help at all. So, has anybody else experienced this? I'm not sure what it is or what to do about it.

Thanks for the help!

Kevin

Does the air filter cannister wobble due to a broken or loose t-bar?  Someone else mentioned getting a hose (or a $10-20 Harbor Freight) listening device (stethescope).

If you are lucky it is something like a cracked belt, or accessory (alternator etc) but wrist pins knock louder under load. Try taking a 6' lenght of garden hose, one end on the block other on your ear, you should be able to localize the sound by moving hose to different places.. BE CAREFULL AROUND BELTS AND OTHER MOVING PARTS.

One thing I'm pretty sure of, it is NOT crankshaft knocking. Tthat would be more pronounced under deceleration
