sandtaz, there are some plastic bushings in the shifter
mechanism
that are likely worn out and there is not enough
"throw" to put it
in park and close the switch. Next time it happens try
moving the
selector to "N" (neutral) and see if it
starts. Five bucks in parts
and an hour or so to change the bushings and your
problems are over
for another 100K miles!

We recently acquired a 1980 300sd with about
125k miles
on the clock. First time out, we drove about
20 miles to
town to get new tires. When the tech tried to
start the
car, nothing happened. No start, no turn over,
no click.
Nothing. Tried jumping. Nothing. Personnel
pushed the car
inside and put on new tires. Pushed car out.
Contacted po
and was told that the same thing had happened
a couple of
time in the past. Po said he thought it might
be neutral
safety switch. Car started after moving gear
shift thru
the gears several times. Ordered new switch.
New switch
came yesterday. No time to put it on. Drove
car to town
today and after refueling it would not start.
Moved thru
the gears many many time. No start. After
several hours
returned and the car started right up. Sounds
like
something electrical is heating up and not
working. Does
the neutral safety switch have any electronics
inside?
Could the started/solenoid be getting hot from
driving? In
the morning I am going to put the new switch
on and see
what happens. Any ideas/suggestions would be
appreciated.
I will post what happens after new switch and
driving.
