Re: [diesel_mercedes] Cheap Generator

Thanx again Max .

I always thought too small would be the problem .

I occasionally run across a HUGE generator (APU more like) from some Commercial building or Govt. tear down project ~ always old yet almost no hours of use, I wondered what I'd do with a power unit that was the size of my little pickup truck .

When I was a Mechanic at LAX, the entire fleet was dual fuel, they decided no more gasoline and didn't bother teaching anyone how the 'carburettors' worked ~ being the new guy I got saddled with the inoperable vehicles (including medium duty trucks and crappy Chevrolet Malibu Police cars) , no help from anyone but I learned a lot really fast .

The oil came out looking like new after 5,000 miles .

They were almost all late 1970's rigs plus a whole buncha Chevy Citations II's ~ good looking cars that were ruined by GM's relentless co$t cutting, they all were junk sad to say .

In the old days, basically there was two choices for a generator. One that runs at 1800 rpm or most that run at 3600 rpms(the screamers). This is the speed needed to obtain 59hz.  The 1800's are best, very heavy, very heavy duty, slo speed means longer life and quiet. There are some really good propane units that run at 1800. Propane puts out 10% less horsepower than gasoline, but who cares, slo speed, very quiet and propane lasts forever. Good choice for "end of the worlders' or SDA. Most good diesel units run at 1800, more fuel efficient that gas or propane.  Now recently someone invented inverter generators. Changed the whole thinking. Now gas generators "can" be as efficient as diesel under certain situations which would be running small loads. Very quiet, very fuel efficient, slo speed for smaller loads. I dont have one yet but probably will get one to run a 55Amp battery charger that takes about 1100 watts.   Then there are the big generator units that run at 1200rpms. I really dont know anything about these but I would love to have a 6 to 10KW diesel that runs at 1200rpms. That would last forever. The good units that run at 1800rpm should last 60,000 hours. I have about 20,000 on my Kubota. One mistake most people make when buying a generator is getting one to big. Do not get one with more power output than you will need(except of course inverter units) especially with diesel as they run best at close to rated output. Its hard to do, but at least do the math and try and come close. Max

Thank you for sharing knowledge Joe .

I help out here and there on other old vehicle forums and am always asked "?~ how the heck do you know all this stuff ?" .

In a few short years our knowledge won't be important any more then it will begin to get lost to the sands of time .

As primarily a German Vehicle mechanic I have learned much that directly applies to my old Japanese Motos and American trucks....

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Cheap Generator

Hi gang!!
in case you need/want, I have a 20Kw propane/natural gas powered, generator I don't need...very low hours, weather cabinet "Generac", with an exercise circuit, Kubota engine, water cooled.

I was chasing an old generator for a while and managed to miss a few powered by inline Ford engines, or whatever, I gave up and bought this one, it was out of the box but had maybe one hour on the meter, it turns out the fuel shutoff valve sticker was wrong so the guy who'd bought it couldn't make it run longer than a few minutes at a time.....

I paid like $300 for it and as soon as I figured out the problem and made it run well, the noise drove me crazy so it just sits there =8-( .

A few years ago I bought a generator @ Harbor Freight, it's a lookalike to a Honda two cylinder 7KW generator apart from the NOISE ! I can't believe how much noise it makes .

The generator is a excellent solution. With the inverter generator it has technology to run only as fast as it needs to to keep the frequency at 59hz, which for smaller loads that means much quieter and using way less fuel and longer life. Max
