Re: [diesel_mercedes] W123 excess tire wear

That's pretty much how Nate drives his 123s, except he doesn't go so slow.

My only problem will be that I didn't pay for the oil change.  I have the sticker on the windshield proving where it was done and when it needs to be done again.  IF they are responsible, I will make sure they pay.

Same thing happened to my sister in one of her new Honda's.  It was the dealership on her first oil change that didn't put the plug or gasket on right!  She got a new engine on their dime.

My 4-spd. got a brand new Mercedes engine installed by a dealer because someone at one of those oil change places left the oil plug loose. I have no idea who paid for it, but I got all the recipts to show it was done. Max

also, note, if you're doing an engine only swap, look at how the throttle
linkeage compares, as well as the "kickdown" for the trans.
some are a rod, some are vacuum.
I don't know the years, but, the trans does change, IIRC, in the early 80's.

Trish,

I'm still not comfortable with all the armchair
diagnoses, at long distance. You're right - you bought yourself a car with
a nearly indestructable engine. So why jump to the conclusion that it is
trashed?

I like the idea, posited by someone else, that you
may have gotten gasoline mixed into your fuel. I DON'T like the idea that
need to throw away the engine without further checking.

ANYONE who tells you to simply drop the pan and
look at the bearings is also telling you that they don't know these cars and
may
not know diesel engines. You can't drop the pan without lifting the engine
to clear front suspension parts that run under the engine.

Do not go for the big fix before checking and
eliminating all of the potentially smaller problems. Each of the things I
suggested in my first response is shade tree mechanic stuff. Don't ignore
them because they aren't as sexy as an engine swap. If you do the small
stuff and it turns out that the engine is crap and needs to be swapped, you
will have done the small stuff and learned a lot about things that will
affect
the "new" engine as well.

If you decide you need a swap, DO get a turbo
engine. It will be a revelation over the non-turbo that you have. Go
to a pick-a-part yard and try to get them to let you pull an
engine/transmission
set in one operation. The 123 body didn't change much over the
years. So a later (lower mileage) engine should fit right in without
difficulty. At the same time, you might want to change out the radiator
for one that you have thoroughly flushed with citric acid, to make sure that
it's all nice and clean internally.

Then you'll be ready for the next 300,000
miles.

Carl,

I had to laugh at myself last night because for one thing here I get a virtually indestructible engine and within 3 weeks I blow it. And now I can get the turbo I wanted in the first place!

What to do with the old one?  Depends on where I get the "new" engine.  When we replaced the one on Kevin's F150 we had to give them the old one for a core. That will help me not have so much stuff around here.

WOW really?  I tried to tell Kevin that checking the fluids and such was HIS job!  That didn't fly.  Humph.  It should have because one time & he swears it never came out of his mouth...he said I was SUPPOSED to do the WOMANS work!  Hahaha...WHAT?  So being raised the way I was I do check my fluids USUALLY.  And I'm the one that's always on him to check his!
