Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: ALDA ADJUST OM617 - T

Fluted tail lights were first introduce in 1972 on the then-new W116 "S-Klasse".  From the May, 1973 Motor Trend road test of the 450SE:

"The fluting on the wrap-around side-lights and taillights is also functional, since it was discovered that they will stay clean in the muddiest, slushiest conditions."

Interesting that MB kept fluted tail lights for decades, but no longer use it on the latest models.  I guess mud and slush behave differently now-a-days....

I think I read that the fluted rear light lenses on the sedans were shaped that way to improve the airflow at the back end. Sounds reasonable.

[diesel_mercedes] Exhaust Smoke

A very good point Derek ;

I used to get diesel smoot on the body both above and below the bumper, I'm still seeing some smoke so I'll wait a bit until I know there's no more crud in the fuel injection system then pull the injectors for pop testing and replace as necessary .

If I _still_ get smoot on the bumper then, I'll prolly replace that beloved straight exhaust tip with a down turned one .

Your "smoot" likely down to aerodynamics. Your pic shows that you have a stubby straight out sports back box, whereas most, I think, OEM systems have the tailpipe cut back to blow down towards the floor. Some car exit pipes, single or twin offset to put the outlets further out to the side of the car. Keep plenty of wax on the bumpers and back panel so the smoot wipes off easy.

[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Economy Check '84 300CD Slushbox [1 Attachment]

[Attachment(s) from Nate included below]

Low fuel lamp on at 385 miles, 387 miles @ 24.7MPG, Biobor used, A/C on the entire tank , maybe the low fuel economy is because we zizzed across the Desert @ 75 ~ 80 MPH fully loaded on cruise control, not slowing down for the hills .

The loping idle still comes and goes .

I changed the filter and you can see the slight accumulation of fine crud .

Onwards, ever onwards ! .
