Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Window Switch Service

Is the flasher unit directly behind the cluster? and is it identical to the two items on the driver fender well right in front of the fuse box and covered by a little black snap off cover?

If it is then yes I picked out the turn signal lever and that little silver box that I just discribed. and tried them both in my car but it didn't help so I replaced with my parts.

I havn't messed with the passenger rear window or the antenne.
Is the electrical system so fragal that a non working passenger rear window switch could brake the circut for blinkers, hazard etc?

Sure could use a wiring diagram of the car.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Window Switch Service

Have you replaced the flasher unit?  I believe it works both the flashers and the hazards.  Rare but not unheard of is a bad turn signal switch.  You could try spraying contact cleaner in there.

Did you try cleaning the window switch for the window that's not working?  Could be the switch in either the console or the door.

Lack of panels lights is notoriously the panel dimmer rheostat.  If you remove the dash cluster, try jumping it with a clip lead wire.  That should get full brightness.  Spraying the rheostat with the contact cleaner may bring it back.

Antenna could be any one of: antenna, antenna switch or wiring, with the antenna being the most likely culprit.

Your description of the unused plugs in front of the shifter makes me think at least one of these is for the cigarette lighter.  If I remember correctly, there's also an interlock that connects to the ashtray so that power to the lighter port is cut off when the ashtray is closed.  'Could be what the other unused connector is for.  Only other thing up there is the connector for the shift indicator light bulb.

The hazard was not that dirty but cleaned out the hazard switch today to no avail still no blinker, no hazard, no passenger side rear window, no antanne, no panel lights whatsoever not even the lights on the air/fan.

I also see a two prong plug on the passenger side of window switches that is the child saftey feature to prevent opening that window. It does have a  female plug plugged into it. The passenger side has the same safty switch but no plug to plug into it.
I also notice that when I leave any one of these plugs unplugged then none of the other switches operate any other window either.

There is a plug in front of the shifter that is female and bolts in one of the shifter bolts with another brown ground on that bolt. The female plug has no male plug and can't find it. I'm assuming this plug would be something for a 4 or 5 speed. And another female plug that is unused in the area of the windows, hazard, speaker fr/rr group of wires.

Just guessing, maybe mercedes would make their bulk wire groups and not make specialized harnesses but just leave unused items unplugged since they are not used.
Either that or I need to pull out the console and find these mates to these plugs. The harnesses appear in factory order with even the tie straps in place which kinda leads me to believe the harnesses are in order and I don't need to look any further.

Everything seems to be in order under the dash and under the hood concerning the wiring.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Will the w201 lock and switch work in the w123?

Scratch that, I pulled the ignition and compared the pin numbers to the old ignition and pin numbers are the same.

Well I'm stumped.

[diesel_mercedes] Will the w201 lock and switch work in the w123?

Under the dash today and it happened to dawn on me about the ignition switch.
I pulled it from a 84 190D which is of the group w201.
I drilled out the pin in the 300D switch so I could remove the entire steerig lock and switch.

So I called the previous owner today and she said everything worked the last time she cranked it, turn signals and all.
Only problem she has was the trans didn't work. I didn't tell her the fluid level was too low for the pump, didn't want to make her feel bad.

Anybody have any idea if the w201 lock and switch should work for the W123?
