I think you are referring to a procedure used on a very few situations where a specific type of starter motor can be dismantled partially and the housing rotated to a different position to allow for clearance of a solenoid. This would not pertain to our cars as far as I can find.

Clocking an alternator is sometimes done in older GMs where the front and rear housings can be rotated to make allowance for different applications. I have done this on certain cars where I could not access the correct alternator. The results would be that the mounting and tensioning ears could be located in different positions.

It's not uncommon to reclock an alternator, but this is the first I've seen of a reclockable starter.  Pretty nifty!
