Caitlin,
I've just looked through the 1997 Mercedes Chassis / Body Service Manual for w126 vehicles. The Seats are covered in Vol. 2, Sec. 91.
The "removal / installation" section talks about removing and installing front and rear seats. the manual makes NO distinction for seats of different years. It doesn't say that some years have different sizes or fittings.
If you are familiar with them, you will know that later years got fancier controls, including powered headrest height adjustment.
But the basic fitting seems to be all the same. The easiest way to get seats in and out is with the mounting bolts to the floor. DO NOT try to take them off the adjusting sliders - instead, take the whole seat assembly out. There are four bolts, one at each side at the front and one at each side in the back. Then there is a sliding rail, along the inside of each front seat (I think it is part of the safety equipment), and the seat belt anchor on the inside.
The 126 seats are DIFFERENT from the 123 seats.
The book also does NOT mention any difference between the 126 and 126L versions.
But, if you are aware of them, the gasser 'L' cars had rear seats that had a semi-reclining mechanism. I think that it is the same basic seat, but with a recliner mechanism in the rear. If it's the same basic seat, it comes out very easily, (MUCH easier than the fronts), and you can just scrap the reclining gear set up.

Hi folks...I am still here, and now that some life things are calming down its time to get back to work on ole Betty.
Saw some seats for sale nearby on CL. They are from a 86 300SDL W126. I have a 83 300SD W126. The current seats I have appear to be from a W123 and arent in great shape and the rear doesn't even seem to be properly installed. The price on these are good so I am wondering if they are a fit.
Thank you!
