Re: [diesel_mercedes] Axles? 300D

Bill,

Not sure, nothing like that, it's a pretty small bolt, just keeps the axle spline in place, so I just gave it a crank with my 3/8 breaker bar. I didn't even have to take the wheel off, just the cap.

OK, I searched and found axle shaft retaining bolt: 30 Nm (22.3 ft lbs) I guess I'll check again.

My Ford E350 Van has a bunch of axle & spring bolts, and lug nuts all at 144ftlbs, which is fun to check, and re-torque.

It does have the donut, yet it looked fine when I pushed the driveshaft up/down back/forth, and was fine last year when I put in a new tranny.

I heard a little less of the noise when I tightened the outer bolt on the axle, which was slightly loose..

Looks like, not an emergency, yet a 'to do' sometime soon, and don't drive too far.

Thanks

Does anyone have any axle recommendations?

I had one of mine replaced at a shop over a year ago (drivers side), and
it seems messed up, I think out of warranty, maybe not. The previous
replacement on the (pass side) is 5yrs old and fine.

I heard some strange sound from the drive train, so didn't drive it for
most of the week, and raised it up, checked bolts, flex disks, and other
parts, along with fluids. The only thing that stood out was this axle.
Engine sounds great, just a light groaning/ vibration from underneath
while driving, first at startup, and later throughout my drive to work.

I'd like to just get a good one, or pair.

Even if the axle isn't causing the noise, it's not right.

Thanks

I didn't bother to type Mercedesresource as I thought Kent was well-known enough to omit that. Digby looks to be a very nice car and well worth spending some money on. Kent might have replacement engine anyway. He's just bought a breaker, see the latest upload, and he recently sold a couple of good engines. It's good YouTube content either way and splitting up this content adds to the clicks. Earning your $, 1 cent at a time.
Thanks for your reply.

[diesel_mercedes] Digby's Travails

Thanx ! .

I don't often watch videos but those were entertaining and informative .

Some here may recall that my 1984 30CD's injection pump's delivery valves were corroded and the wells full of occluded fuel ~ I removed all the delivery valves and cleaned out the occluded fuel then tried a parade of used delivery valves to no good effect so I then purchased a set of five new delivery vslves, that helped some but not enough .

It was interesting that Kent here didn't say ' rust in the IP means it's junk' as so many told me .

I watched all five videos and hope to see #6 ere long .

[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Fungus

Please not that this current issue is with the very first Mercedes I bought, close to twenty years ago and it's never until now, had any fungus issues .

My Coupe OTOH, came to me with a badly screwed up fuel system and yes, it took me a few _YEARS_ to ket fully clean .

So far (fingers crossed) the wagon is doing fine .

I'm now a firm believer in Bibor fuel treatment, Mercedes says it's the only approved fungus treatment .

I'm pretty sure my habits of buying fuel late at night or before the buttcrack of dawn is why I have so many dirty fuel issues ~ ask Tom, I've never met anyone, not even Customers who gets as much bad fuel as I do .

Gas or Diesel,. if there's bad fuel to be had, I'll find it .

-Nate
           Rob  wrote :

Derek,

Funny you're asking Nate about fungus, as he's been dealing with fungus issues forever.

We still don't know how he does it. Maybe it's where he buys his diesel.

Others have an issue and it goes away with a bottle of Startron, yet with Nate is more chronic.

After saying this, I better go buy a bottle of Startron, to make sure I'm clean.

Rob

One bad fungus episode, where I almost got stranded.

Thanks for the link. Interesting on the injector pump valve check, never seen or done that before.

Nate and I were pop testing injectors over here once, with one of Ken's older pop testers.
