[diesel_mercedes] Re: Re : CNG Conversions

Nate,

Thanks for this careful walk through of this LP gas conversion system.

This thing has not been cranked in a number of years. Because it had been running on LP I am thinking it might not have a gummed up carb or stale fuel issues that could create start up problems. Am I right about that one?

Other must do's before I try and crank this sucker?

I know about the battery water and oil, fluids ect. but not sure about weather to give it a shot of raw gas, starter fluid or LP.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Minor Miscellaneous Tasks

Good to hear from you Tom (I thought you had died). Yes, I may have to pull it out again and reinstall. It was such a bugger last time, I wanted to avoid doing it, but as long as I am going to remove the door panel anyway (for the new map case), and yank the seat out, I might as well pull the door seal while I am at it.

Brian,

As to your #9 door issues, I recently changed the door panel on my 126.  It then was hard to close.

So, I took the panel off again, and was more careful about reseating the new one.  Turns out that just as with the rest of the car, the German perfectionist, fiddly engineers design door panels that will fit perfectly ONE WAY.  Miss a single hook or other alignment bit and the fit is WRONG.

The new panel I installed is from a more recent 126, one of those with the in-door speakers, at the rear of the map pocket.  They LOOK deeper and threaten to hit the side of the seat.  But in reality, when properly installed, it fit fine.

The big problem with my first try was with the dampening foam that runs along the top of the door, just under the curved in part of the panel the goes to the window channel.  I used double sided tape to hold the foam strip in place.  But it slipped as I was trying to get all the hooks done on the panel.  Just that little bit of foam out of position messed with the door closing right.  I was able to find good clean foam strips in P-a-P 126s that had not had door work.

(I don't know if the 123 models have that foam strip on their doors.)

9. Take a look at my wifes seat (Martha) to see why it slips when I sit in it. Also, look at the trannie shifter to see why it is not locking in park. Maybe take the door panel off and replace the map case (repaired with Goop) with a pristine one found at a PAP. See if I can shave a little rubber from the recently replaced door seal which now requires some muscle to close.

I need to buy some oil filters for my gasser '86 260E; I need the OEM style and would like to buy them online. Any idea of where I can get them? Forgive me for asking a gasser question in the diesel forum but I know some of youse have them. Thanks.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re : Hijacked E-Mails..where's Trish

Oh hacking yahoo...I never, ever use my yahoo email.  I was hacked a while back.  Just last week I got a hacked message from a friend of ours that "just hopped over to Scotland for the weekend"  I knew it was fake and had fun calling her about it.  Like Kevin said, people may call us for a LOT of things, but borrowing money is NOT one of them!

I'm here...just non-stop busy.  This weekend it was cutting a hole in the wall to install a window a/c unit since it's supposed to hit 90 degrees this week!

And I FINALLY got the fence up around the garden area, about 40' oblong.  Has the dogs all worked up!

And while Kevin was cutting holes in the house I walk mowed another acre...OK maybe a bit shy of that much, at least it feels like I did that much!

I'm also trying to bond with my car.  It no longer leaks like I own a freaking oil well!  I hope we can get to a PAP this up coming weekend to find the fan for the front so I can hook up the a/c and hopefully it'll work and so I can find a washer reservoir...Dirty windshields drive me nuts!

Since my tags expire TODAY I have been struggling with the former owner over the title which he signed in the wrong place. I left a message for the grandson, of course didn't hear back, thankfully I have all of the paperwork so I was able to call Todd (grandpa)...he was peeved!  He had no idea GS sold the car!  He was also peeved because he thought the kid had gotten it in his name a year ago! (Which is his own dumb fault, he should have gotten the registration in the mail recently and should have wondered why)  He has to send in a copy of his drivers license to the tax office (because he lives too far away to meet me there and doesn't know me, or trust me with a copy of his license) along with an affidavit stating he signed on the wrong line. He works at a hospital and has odd hours so it's hard to get a hold of him and apparently lying runs in the family.  When I called at 11:30am on Thurs his wife said he was sleeping and she'd give him the message.  I left another at 8pm.  When he called me on Friday at 9:30am he told me he just got off of a 36 hour shift...so, was he sleeping less than 24 hours earlier or at work????  Hmmmm.

I do have a shudder or thudding (IMO) that I feel around 55+ MPH.  Kevin thinks he might have put something to do with the transmission on backwards...have no clue what he's talking about, neither does he. :(

Mechanically she's running fine.  Has a rattle in the exhaust, which I'm not sure what to do about.  I've already taken it to the guy 2x and I hate to go back a third.  I know he had a stroke and wonder if his work is lacking in quality due to that.

Happy motoring everyone.

I wouldn't mess with it. Too dangerous IMHO.

RE: [diesel_mercedes] Re : CNG Conversions

Timely topic.  I just converted my Honda EU2000i generator to run on propane/LP this weekend.  We bought a travel trailer and wanted to not have to deal with carrying gasoline.

Now to fit a biodiesel holding tank…

They use a very simple yet weird carby , some have dual fuel capacity , others only run CNG once converted .

Do the basic tune up stuff first then look at the electric fuel cut off valve , it's a safety device that clogs up with rust silt and other dry powdery crap that the CNG folks say doesn't exist.....

It sure caused many of the old LAX CNG Fleet to come to a halt .

The carby was super simple yet tricky to adjust so resist touching or cleaning it until it simply refuses to run & you have done _EVERYTHING_ELSE_ .

I remember very little apart from the hours of frustration trying to make vehicles no one else could fix , run , in time I did it but I'd suggest maybe you go to Pick-A-Part and replace the original carby as they ran really well on pump gas once you cleaned and adjusted them , yes , even those danged Carter Thermo-Quad plastic carbys were pretty good once sorted out .

Other Dodge carbys have adjustable metering rods that some damnfool always cranked all the way out to have more power , then they'd smoke black , run too rich , foul spark plugs , load up and clog catalytic exhaust converters and fail SMOG tests so expect some serious fiddling before this old truck runs sweet & strong , well worth the effort IMO .
