[diesel_mercedes] V-A-C-A-TION !

Greetings from bucolic Atascadero , California =8-) .

SWMBO and I hit the road in the clapped out 1982 240D automatic as we're in the middle of a heat wave and this is the only vehicle I have with working AC at the moment .

I filled it up this afternoon and was pleased to see it got 26.6 MPG in spite of only 200 # compression in # 1 cylinder and needing to go up steeper hills in third gear @ 38 ~ 40 MPH (AC on) .

It's been running consistently @ 90 ~ 100 * C , it cools right off to 80* C or less when I idle it for any amount of time .

The " TRANS-X " snake oil I added last fall is still doing it's <magic> ~ no ATF loss  and the shifting is *perfect* .

The driver's seat spring is broken and collapsing , this gave my sciatic nerve a wallop so I had to stop and walk around a few times , took 500  Mg of Ibuprofen mid way through the day .

As usual , this worthless totally worn out old Automobile chugs happily along , I down shift manually and go easy on the revs going up hills ~ I'm sure I could flog it to 50 MPH on the hills but why ? .

My Lady is enjoying the drive , we came up I5 to SR 166 West to SR101 to avoid all the smoke and fires around Sta. Barbara , I think I'll go across SR58 through Bakersfield to - morrow when we head home .

Did I ever mention how much I love this old Junk Yard refugee ? .

-Nate

You're most welcome .

The brain trust here is incredible , never hesitate to ask even the most mundane questions .

Be aware that I'll always try to help but you really should talk to others before blindly accepting my advice....

It's the Weekend , I got up before sunup and washed my Coupe and Moto before it got hot as we have terribly hard water that leaves nasty spots if it's allowed to dry .

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY in advance , I may get up early to - morrow and ride my Moto .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: 83 300SD Greasecar Conversion

Hate to say it, but it may cost more to fix it than you will get out of it, unless you can find a fellow enthusiast who wants to do the work. They are fun to own and drive but they are not fun to fix and sell when you only have 30 days to play. How about finding a storage unit to use for 3 - 4 months while you put it back together? The problem is still the same however: how much can I get for it as is (or fixed up) versus how much do I put into it so I can sell it.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Heat

Just got back from Lopez where we spread ashes of my friend. Week before I left , 101 in town, last week we had two frosts, but we been getting rain too. Glad I dont have those CC systems in my Mercedes. Over on Lopez a guy showed up in a 1980 240 4spd, just like mine. Max

When I was young and skinny , the dry heat didn't bother me atall ~ I grew up Down East where 100° F was a rare thing but high humidity was the norm so the dry Desert air was nice .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: 83 300SD Greasecar Conversion

I sold my 300TD (wagon) for 4100 with 2500 down in San Francsco.  After a few months of waiting for the rest of the money the disgruntled buyer blamed me for every problem he had with the car.  It has a nice solid conversion.  I drove it for years and got my money out of it.  I sold mine on Craigslist.  I advise getting the full amount out of it but I didn't have room and sold with just the down payment.  I'd say your car is worth 2000 dollars with the conversion for an SD.  Less for a w123 sedan. Grease is becoming less popular since it takes a mechanic to drive one these days.  I got blamed for a rattling gear shifter when it was really the drive shaft tearing itself apart. Which took out the rear bearing in the transmission. That is on the buyer.  Look for comparable vehicles in your area and add a bit for the conversion.  Be aware the market is a buyers market.  Lawrence Rhodes...go electric(Nissan Leaf) and forget about the diesels and grease it's a dying breed.  favorite this post Mercedes 300SD 1979 Bio-Diesel Conversion Friendly - $1600 (concord / pleasant hill / martinez) hide this posting restore this posting Here is a typical California car with the years not seeming to matter as I saw 5 in the bay area in this condition.  California cars are mostly rust free but they leak.  Lawrence Rhodes
