Larry,

The usual repair is to stuff two pool noodles in the seat.

Let me know how the seat repair goes. I just bought this 92 3ooD and the interior is beautiful but the drivers seat is like sitting in a garbage can with no bottom. There is no support in the seat bottom.

Second, she does not know that I put new grommets, nuts, and washers on and cleaned 270,000 miles of grease and grime off the engine. Third, how exciting it was to discover a plastic cap like off a Tide bottle inside the canister among the usual bees, bugs, and leafy materials.

Oh yah, the state is looking at an increase on car registrations to help pay our way out of debt. Lets see, 1.8% of vehicle value =s 1.8% x $2000 =s $30-$40 - yep, I can handle that.

! GUILTY AS CHARGED ! =8-) .

SWMBO has a nifty 1997 Toyletta Corroded 4 Dr. Sedan , it's *perfect* and has only used one rebuilt stater , three batteries and a few sets of tiny tires (cute lil things) , not even a brake job yet and it *always* starts instantly and the AC is like Alaska in January .

Nevertheless , I'd happily bang every inch of it with a sledge hammer then pour gasoline all over it and toss in a lit match then dance 'rond the burning pyre , cackling with glee ~ I hate it that much .

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.  I was guilty of Geezer Think "I've seen this before and I did this and it worked", only this time it didn't .  I had noticed some funky wires at the terminal block on top of the right front wheel inner panel caused by a rust through right under the block.  One of the wires was terminal at the terminal due to corrosion.  I made up a 5" square steel panel to cover the hole, sealed it with panel sealer,  installed a better terminal block  and spliced in a new wire section.  I also used shrink tubing on all of the wires as additional protection.  Problem solved!  Incidentally, the 300D  factory manual didn't cover alternator testing or any details other than the wiring diagram while the 300SD  CD showed block diagrams of several of the circuits including the generator circuit as well as test directions.

[diesel_mercedes] MB Philosophical Musings

Thinking about why we like our 25+ year old diesels, I keep forgetting about one of the major reasons, to wit, most of us grew up with 1940-1970 cars which had lots of open space under the hoods. It was easy to take things apart and put things back in. Wrenching was easy, and shade tree mechanic was meaningful. Although we bought later cars with electronics and hood space nil, we mentally never forgot the pleasure of digging into the vintage cars where spark plugs were out in the open and you did not have to go underneath to try and find them.

Well, the 1970-1985 Mercedes give you that same feel (except for those ridiculously hidden glow plugs and a few other things). I just like the idea of being able to see what I am working on and being able to lay a wrench or socket or screwdriver on what I am doing (for the most part).

I am philosophical this week because I have been on the freeways at 100 miles per day. No time for wrenching, just enjoying the car - except when the rock truck in front of me dropped a big one on my new window).

Subject: [diesel_mercedes] Monrovia PAP

Today I went back to the Monrovia PAP. Here is what I brought home:
2 seal beam headlights at $4.00 each; 2 clear fog lamps at $9.00 each (the counter guy said $37.50 each, I said no way; he said but they are German, look it says Bosch; I said where is the yard boss; he said I will call him; I reminded said yard boss that I am a good guy; yard boss said "call them lenses" for $9.00 each). I am just changing out the old yellow fog lamps I never use and putting the clears in for better night time vision.

Here is what I left behind:
1. 2 300D tail light assemblies (I give them a grade of "B" only because there is age cracking on the white bottoms. I may go back and pick them up for my car, but I don't need them at the moment.
2. There are 5 or 6 240D Hub Caps which need clean up and repaint (2 yellows look good as is).
3. There are 4 or 5 Bundts with tires that look pretty good. If I needed a spare tire, or wanted to powder coat some more wheels I would grab these. They are on the car today, maybe not tomorrow.
4. In the fenced area (cars not released into the yard as title is not cleared yet), there is a plethora of treasures - 123's, 126's, 114's 116,s, and many more. These would make you drool and think of ways to be there when the forklift brings them out. Monrovia is looking better in my book, worth making monthly or quarterly checks.

Saw a really nice looking TD with all the right parts. Unfortunately, it was in the parking lot and the owner was inside the yard.

Monday, I will head for Ontario PAP (a sister to Monrovia) which usually has a good selection of MB's, and then to Pomona which is not quite as good as the other two.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: 300DL W-123 Limo

Ya know that turbos and auto trannys were made for each other, the turbo doesn't dump manifold pressure when it shifts, the stick does.  Remember 5 or so years ago when all the Kool Kar Kids were driving stick turbos, and they made that big 'coke bottle' sound when they shifted? 'Twas the sound of their blower dumping manifold pressure...

Ah, but a closer look would reveal it's NOT NA (if, in this case, "NA" means Normally Aspirated).  The photo of the engine shows the tell-tale u-shaped tube below the air filter housing, indicating the presence of a turbo.  Also, the EGR can be seen, and it has the later cruise control, further evidence that this engine is at least a few years newer than the rest of the car.

Add to that, MB never made a LWB 300D.  (I'm pretty sure of that, anyway....)  In Europe, limos were considered working vehicles whose purpose was to make a profit.  The lower initial cost and on-going maintenance were valued more than the driver's comfort or convenience.  So, it was probably originally a 240D LWB, now with an OM617A dropped in.  Which, would make for a very interesting drive, provided it was done correctly....
