Re: [diesel_mercedes] glow plug problem

If the dash light didn't come on you should suspect that at least two plugs are dead. And maybe three. There is a relay and control box under the hood on the left inner fender well near the left headlight - about 12 inches back from the headlight. It should b3 under a plastic form fitted cover. It has two plugs - one with smaller-ish wires and one with 5 larger-ish ones. The plug with the 5 larger wires is the feed for the glow plugs themselves. You will need to unplug that plug to test the glow plugs individually. Their resistance is near zero ohms to begin with so an ohm meter will only help detect an open plug. A shorted plug will likely blow the big fuse at the "rear" end of the relay. The best way to test them is with a DC ammeter under power. Each working plug should pull between 8 and 12 amps. A wire from the battery through an ammeter and to each plug, one at a time, is the best way to find a bad glow plug. But be sure to disconnect the feed plug
first.

[diesel_mercedes] glow plug problem

I tried to start my '85 TD yesterday. I saw the indicator on the dash did not light up, and it wouldn't start. Obviously, the glow plugs didn't heat up, either. Is there a relay that needs to be looked at, and where would it be? The voltage in the battery is OK so it is not the problem.
Sid, near Niagara Falls.

...well, the path of least resistance wins again - my last post about Silvia said she had too much valve slop discovered during a routine valve adjustment. Thank goodness for 2nd opinions. I had the good fortune to befriend a local diesel mechanic who was so intrigued with my plight that he made a house call. Long story short, yes, there is some valve slop on #2 exhaust valve, but not out of reason for 285k mi. He put the wrenches in the right places, got the valve train adjusted to spec and we're driving again. 6 weeks of angst worrying about a head job and the only head job I got was 6 weeks of needless worry.

Thanks to everyone for your comments and offers of help/support - over and out for now....

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Wheels for 300 TD

Well, I can also do it minus the tires. We used to manufacture rims from 13" to 17" by the multiplied millions for GM, Ford, and Chrysler plants in the Los Angeles area. So I can measure them from the flat pieces of steel (rim) or the square piece of steel (spider) that was welded together (or riveted for larger truck rims). Four things stand out in my memory from those days:  1) when I shoved some steel into a guys chest (he survived); 2) When I stacked 10,000 lbs of steel off center and it crashed with an earthshaking roar; 3) when I dropped a wheel on my toe twice in a week; and 4) when I was stacking 3 pallets of wheels for storage and the bottom pallet broke causing 100-150 wheels to come tumbling down (being young and spry, I rolled off the forklift and hid until the noise stopped - then it was off to the hospital for a walking cast.

Correct Boyd ! .

How many people other than I do you know who'll take the time to buy tires by the O.D. ? .

Most folks will say " it doesn't make any difference " ~ they're dead wrong .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Window problems

As you stated you can make the windows work by applying 12 VDC to the switch plugs .

IIRC , the windows have the power run directly to them and the switches operate the ground paths...

This one should be fun if frustrating to figure out .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Exhaust Manafold to down pipe connection question

That actually makes sense now that I am thinking back to when I was under there last time to put the springs in, which may now come out.
I did make some adjustments to the bracket you mention so I could locate the pipe more towards the center of its route.

Been sick for a week so I have not had a chance to see if its leaking at my spring fix.

Many Thanks !

Steve
