Re: [diesel_mercedes] RE: 72 220D 4 spd manual

Not getting any younger is way better than not getting any older.   No one has figured an acceptable way around that as far as I know.

hi gang.
well, I've decided I'll not ever get round to fixing the old girl.
the head cracked over a year ago, and well time and money are not on my
side.
there are pics of it on the photo gallery for this group. it's black,
red interior. AC is taken out, but parts are there.
4 spd manual. manual windows. It's dirty from sitting, but a good solid
car *except the engine, which I'd say just needs a new head.*. I have
the old head, but it has 6 cracks according to magnaflux.

Make me an offer, or trade, or cut cards. I'd like it to go to someone
who'll use it, it drove and all very good, all systems working when parked.

It's located in Grass Valley CA.

Yeah Nate.......me too.
but, putting a child through college, when you make too much for
charity, and not enough to afford it, puts one in a tough space, of
sacrificing and prioritizing.

[diesel_mercedes] 'Lecktrickery

There's a window relay behind the instrument cluster, according to MB electrical trouble shooting manual, as well as 2 fuses: 1 hot all the time, other hot on start/run.

There should be a cardboard inside the fuse box lid that details which fuse powers the windows ~ test that with your test light _before_ you touch the fuses ~ I can't tell you how oftn I find bad connections on the fuse box when the owner insists all is well . Then you'll have to trace the power source from the fuse box , the wires are all color coded , prolly black with a colored stripe . The wire you're looking for should have the same color stripe at the switch , that *one* wire where , if you apply power , all the windows work normally . I wish I was more help than this ,electrical is always slow , deliberate work but very rewarding once you figure out where the open circuit is . FWIW , the Performance Parts catalog shows what relay does what and where it's located , usually on the left front inner fender housing . -Nate Kevin Wrote: Nate, I already replaced all of the fuses with the good copper ones and cleaned all the contact points. [diesel_mercedes] RE: 1979 300SD W116

WELCOME Bud ! .

Your S Klasse has a tricky electro-mechanical HVAC thing that craps out without warning if you fail to keep the coolant *perfectly* clean and changed & flushed every 12 months .

We have severl W116 lover here , Ben are you there ? .

Just wanted to introduce myself to the group.  I picked up a 1979 300SD during the summer and have been doing minor repairs to get her on the road.

It's been a week since I've been driving it and have been adjusting to driving a land yacht again.  I haven't driven an automatic in over 20 years and from what I can remember this is the smoothest shifting car I've driven.

Have gone through about a half tank of diesel, so not sure of what mpg yet.

Trying to read through a lot of topics on this car just to figure out how everything works.

[diesel_mercedes] Charging Voltage on 71 220D

Mike ;

That's very good indeed .

As long as it remains above 13 VDC when you're on the throttle , you're good to go .

The proper charging rate is 13.2 ~ 14.7 VDC , measured above idle a little bit .

My fix after messing around with high output alternators was to use _ONLY_ Bosch branded voltage regulators ~ you should pick one up now and stash it in your glove box because when the brushes wear down you'll be stuck with whatever crappy " it's just as good as the Bosch one ! " junk the partshaus has and that _always_ charges too low no matter what .

Easy to change in one minute , too .

-Nate

        Mike Asked :

Does anyone know what I should get from the alternator?  Right now when cruising under load I am getting around 13.5.

I have had no starts but should that happen when the battery is at 12.3?

Thanks you guys are great.

[diesel_mercedes] RE: Additives & Fluid Levels

I'm shocked anyone would drive their car and not check the fluid regularly .

My rebuilt tranny seems fine , so far it hasn't needed topping up .

Victor is always helpful and he re connected my leaky central locking , this means if I drive with the driver's side door unlocked and shut off the car , I have to walk around to the other side and manually lock it and the trunk remains unlocked .

So , to  - day after I did the routine LOF service and de greased the engine , undercarriage and driveway , I re - disconnected the central locking after making sure to shut it off with the doors locked , now my trunk is safe again .

Nothing but spare quarts of ATF & ooil in there , along with Diesel smoot residue I need to clean up .

To - morrow I take SWMBO's '82 240D for it's routine LOF service .

1. It dipped below 70F here in the Los Angeles area, so I added 4 oz of Winter (white container) Diesel Kleen. I know that technically "winter" is still 21 days away, but there is snow in the mountains.
2. Had a drip, drip leak out of the power steering pump. Couple of mechanics wanted to piddle fiddle with the pump. I chose to try Lucas Power Steering Leak Stop. It has stopped the leak so far (2 weeks) - hooray for Lucas.
3. Transmission was slipping. Thought I would have to take it in to "Victor" for a post fix adjustment. While checking the dip stick, it were dry as a bone. Two quarts of trans fluid solved that problem, but raised concerns about a shop that fixes trannies, but doesn't run the car and then top off the fluid.
4. Shockingly, I went 320 miles on 12.0 gallons (26.6 mpg). At the moment I will say it is new tires, properly inflated, and superior driving skills.

[diesel_mercedes] Black Friday Fun

Interestingly ;

The rain stopped well before anyone else showed up and we had a terrific fun drive and luncheon

Dry roads , green as can be scenery , no one crashed no got ticketed .

We even had a '41 Packard 120 DHC .

On the way home , in Sun Valley I hit a serious downpour and had to run the wipers a fairly good bit .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Voltage on 71 220D

Thanks I wish I knew that last year when I replace the alternator. I think the 12.3 might be due to the fact it sat for over 24 hours without being started maybe I don't know.

Yes 12.3 might work but then your battery will be in a constant state of undercharge.  Your battery will last less long and when the cold weather comes watch out.  Replacing the voltage regulator is the least you can do.  Then if it can't put out replace the alternator.  I can get them from the warehouse for 89 dollars.
