Most of the time the oil pressure gauge shows 45+ on the on pressure. But sometimes at idle it will lower down to about 37-38 ish (I'm blanking on what type of units this would be in). It goes right back up if you give it a little gas. Should I be concerned?

[diesel_mercedes] Re: 1980 300SD will not turn over after short/long drive

Thanks to everyone for their comments, suggestions and advice. Finally got around to replacing the neutral safety switch (had 40 mph winds here in southern Arizona the last two days) and drove it to town and back (30 miles) and everything seems to be working fine. Shut it off two different times and it started right up. I will take Nate's advice and replace the solenoid. Nate, we just love the car and almost everything works, at least most of the time. Still have to tackle the jumping temp gauge, right side windows (motors work but do not operate the regulator) and the super slow acceleration. This car is much slower than our 81 300SD. Cleaned the banjo bolt to the ALDI valve but not any better. At least it gives me something to do with all my spare time. HA HA. Thanks again and you can be assured that I will have more questions/problems.

[diesel_mercedes] 1980 300SD will not turn over after short/long drive

Save time and aggravation by replacing the starter's solenoid right now and only use a BOSCH branded one NEW only no rebuilts .

If it does this one more time , remove the driver's side under dash cover and look closely as the electrical portion of the ignition switch ~ I'm betting it yellow n color and shouldn't be ~ the plastic should be white and have no visible cracks .

Also , unless your HVC has three round dials to control it or has an upgraded digital controller , do a major coolant service including flushing the heater core right now before it dies in traffic and co$t$ you well over $2,000.00 to set right again .

How do you like your W-116 so far ? . they're very nice cars .

sandtaz, there are some plastic bushings in the shifter
mechanism
that are likely worn out and there is not enough
"throw" to put it
in park and close the switch. Next time it happens try
moving the
selector to "N" (neutral) and see if it
starts. Five bucks in parts
and an hour or so to change the bushings and your
problems are over
for another 100K miles!

[diesel_mercedes] Air Con Woes

Well Max ;

Back when my car was new I only weighed 165 # so it was easy .

Now I'm old and 240 # so I prefer AC when I can get it , oddly enough I drive my Metropolitan Nash more in the Summer than in any part of the year .

I'm in the process of re learning AC Service , I stopped in 1986 IIRC , cannot seem ot find an honest or competent AC man anywhere so I'll just do what I have to do .

The plus side is : Tom's old 1979 Dodge D200 cvrew cab pickup will once again have AC  before too long =8-)

To directly answer your question : I drive with the vents open and the fan on , windows down and elbow out .

I figure I can use to sweat off some pounds , a bit of sweating like a naughty girl in Church never hurt anyone

AC is still dead but it's running fine , I adjusted the valves recently .

387 miles 24.2 MPG .

It's very consistent freeway or in town .

For now I'm finished tinkering on it , all the windows and door checks work as - new again and i added the plastic vapor barriers , replaced the slightly cracked driver's side door card and up graded the driver's arm rest to full length

To - day I washed and waxed it ~ boy that's a LOT of car to wax~ I didn't actually wax the whole thing but it sure is shiny & pretty now .

I have to replace the rotted exhaust hangers with the improved R107 ones then I can give it back to SWMBO ~ she'll love it as I removed and shampooed all the carpets and did some serious de greasing etc. , etc......

I'm still looking for the third seat seat belts .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] 1980 300sd will not turn over after short/long drive

Sure sounds like the neutral safety switch to me.  There are no electronics in there (one of the beautiful things about the W116 diesels is there are NO electronics, anywhere, outside of the radio).  But if it's contaminated with oil or the contacts are corroded, the connections could get iffy and be temperature sensitive.

If it's bad or missing shift linkage bushings, then it would start in other than Park or Neutral.  You could try to see if it turns over in Reverse or Drive.  Just be REAL careful if it fires up....
