Well after conversing with you about the filler plugs and since I had mine out I took it to the auto parts store and got a nylon gasket that is a little too big but it screwed in good. The well versed store guy thought it should have a washer. I figured it really didnt matter much, but he gave me one to try and now its on the car.  Wow, that looks like a lot of crud in the pics. I had none in mine, no magnet tho, but it looked pretty good in the drain and all. Max

O.K. , It still sings loudly after changing the gear lube and adding two rare earth magnets (one to each plug) so I've been keeping an eye on it to see if it leaks the oil out again and noticed a dribble of oil , I thought the filler plug was leaking again , jacked and blocked the car , drained it to find both plugs covered in SWARF and the oil came out grey in color .

Turns out I was wrong (again) : there's no gasket on the filler plug , it just really needs a mighty tug on the wrecnh to properly tighten it .

It also turned out the filer plug wasn't leaking at all ~ the vent on the very top of the pumpkin was dribbling out oil so I cleaned the entire pumpkin and under neath rear 1/4 of the car , a lot more yellow paint was revealed from what I'd thought was black paint .

I wire brushed the serial # and ratio stamps , it has a 3.07 ratio , pretty high and explains why it takes off leisurely but flies on the Open Road .

I have to begin looking for another pumpkin , Bill's handy reference page tells what years / models have what ratios , I thought I bookmarked it but may have saved it in my ' Mercedes service and parts ' files , I have to get more caught up before I can even begin  search for it and look for pumpkins .

Taking the day off to - day to drive my Sweetie around , to - morrow will be old Dodge truck brakes, et.  etc. .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] AC Need And Service

Yea, ditto on your first part for me too. In the 50's and 60's as far as I knew ac was only in Cadillacs. never knew of anyone who had it., I now say bull to the dry heat thing, when its hot its hot. Up here 80 degrees is hot with low humidity, I'll still keep my ac going (to a certain point anyway) for as long as I can. Funny thing it works great in the Subaru but I dont drive that car when its hot, but the heater will almost melt the vents. I've looked at all the joints for signs of leakage,new compressor added stop leak uv dye . When it works it works good. Ahhhhhhh well. Max

When I was young , no one I knew had AC , not in cars nor the home .

A I was always skinny I didn't really miss it even after I moved to California because as they always say " it's a DRY HEAT " .

As I got older & fatter (240#) I began to like it and now I prefer it .

Anyway Max , most of the time there's a tiny slow leak somewhere , if you clean everything it's show up near a joint by attracting dirt and dust , most often as the compressor as it wears normally , other wise usually  at joints , there are special O-Rings in every joint and they degrade with time more than anything else .

If you're just shooting a can of Freon onto it , remember to add one can with oil in it .

Using a pressure gauge is wise too as it's very easy to inject too much Freon and this reduces the system's ability to cool .

R143a should never be allowed to have more than 240 # pressure as higher pressure reduces the cool .

Ps, I have to say I would not be doing this if I had to go to a ac shop and I have already invested enough money in the 240's ac system. Pretty much replaced everything I could find so now its down to re-charges every year or so and I figure its only the cost of the juice at this point. Max

Thanx Bill ;

I might just need that for my Wagon , I know something in the hatch area is cracked....

At it turns , W123's use two pieces to make up the skid plate and only one is currently available , I have that and will have to dig it out to see which one I still need and begin a diligent search .

These people may also have the Skid Plate if you ask them.

I know that the skid plate was an option but U.S. buyers don't feel the need. Both sets of my grandparents bought 1961 Mercedes. The college prof took European delivery and had the skid plate. The farmer took delivery in Eugene , Oregon and did not have the skid plate. Bill in Oregon

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Parts

It's hard to determine quality on some items.  You can see if a forging looks good or not but you still have no idea about the metallurgy.

Not sure about ' most ' quality parts being Chinese Alan ;

I do see they're getting better and better , like the Japanese bid from the 1950's through the 1960's but China is much slower to ramp up on quality manufacturing .

' URO  ' is a brand name for low cost European auto parts .

Some of it (especially rubber items) is worthless crap .

Some of it is O.K. ~

I just didn't want to pop $500 + for an original Mercedes one but I might just because I'm tired of fooling with it and I only like fixing things once , believe it or not .

Gives me more time to teach my self other things.....

I need to find a source for ' Monark ' brand injector nozzles ~ as far as I can tell , the only ones still made in Germany and I have as of yet to find anyone who didn't like them .
