RE: [diesel_mercedes] 3rd Brake Light

Well, it seems the conclusion from most of that, is that the high, center-mounted brake light was likely effective when first implemented, 30-years ago, when they were a novelty, but now that they're so commonplace, probably not so much.

I've been rear-ended twice in the last five-years.  Once in my '84 K10 (no center mounted-brake light) and once in a 2012 Ford Ranger (with center-mounted brake light).  In both cases, the car that hit me was actually pushed into me by a third car that went into the car behind me.

Most of the miles I rack up around town are on 40- 50-year old motorcycles with single, small tail/stop lights, not high-mounted or particularly bright, and I haven't had so much as a scare (from behind, anyway) in the 40-plus years I've had my motorcycle endorsement.  But, who knows.  It's possible the sand is about to run out of the hourglass....

I tend to agree.  Has there been any evidence that the high-mounted brake reduced rear-end collisions since implemented in the mid-80s?  It just smacks to me of "feel-good" legislation.  If the driver behind you is more focused on his hands or the dash, does yet another light in front of his face going to make any difference?

[diesel_mercedes] Transitioning this group to groups.io

Hi all,

Given all the changes to Yahoo recently, I'm not sure how long they will keep running groups.yahoo.com. To avoid our group disappearing into the digital afterlife, I've set up a new version of this group at https://groups.io/g/dieselMercedes. The new group is empty right now, but read on for details...

groups.io was started by the same guy (and former boss of mine) who started Onelist, which Yahoo bought and turned into Yahoo Groups. So I think groups.io is a trustworthy service.

They offer the ability to transfer Yahoo Groups, and I'm going to take them up on this feature. This will preserve all our message archives and photos. It will *not* preserve attachments to messages. It will also transfer the member list to groups.io. As a result, you will likely receive an email from them announcing the transfer.

I don't hand out your email addresses lightly (haven't done this before). If you don't want to have your email address shared with groups.io, please unsubscribe from this group by 11:59 pm (Eastern US time) Friday, November 24, 2017. Otherwise, I will complete the transfer sometime this weekend. You can resubscribe here after this weekend and your email won't be shared with groups.io

I will leave this group up and running as long as Yahoo (or whoever owns the Yahoo name now) keeps it going. You are welcome to post here as long as you want. You can post to both/either groups. You can also leave the groups.io group if you don't like it and your membership in this Yahoo group won't be affected.

If anyone feels strongly against this move to groups.io, feel free to respond this message. Happy to hear anyone's thoughts on alternative services we could use. I don't want to maintain a bunch of different new sites, though, so if you prefer a different service, you'll have to convince many other members to agree with you :)

Happy Thanksgiving to our US members and hello to everyone outside the US!

Re: [diesel_mercedes] 3rd Brake Light

A fun memory from the distant past when NJ inspection rejected my 3CV truckettte because the tail light  was centered above the rear doors. I suggested that this arrangement was no different then that of many wreckers who had their light at the end of the boom.  Then we got to the headlight aiming.  The inspector said it was off.  Since the French, aware of the high compliance suspension, made the headlight height aiming adjustable, I asked the inspector where he wanted it.  Wrong again!    Luckily I was able to transfer the registration to NY with its gas station inspection system which could be remarkably compliant.
