Rule number one: if you think that the Alt or battery is dead, don't
turn off the car until you're where you want to be.
After going through 3 Alts in a year and a half, I too went for the
Bosch, and knock on zebra wood, no issues since.
The last Alt failure was in SLO 222 miles away from home, so I drove
straight home, no wipers, no radio, no AC....yes, it was during daylight
hours.

Last week, my son came to pick me up at Boston Logan and as he pulled in, the seat controls were activating on their own(!), the dash lights were coming on and off, windshield washers wouldn't work, and sadly - when he turned off the engine, it wouldn't start again (dead battery). Thankfully we got it started and limped it home, then to the garage. My guess at the time was a bad alternator, which was confirmed. I had it rebuilt when I swapped the engine in 3.5 yrs / 35K mi ago, and last year it needed a voltage regulator. This time we bit the bullet and put in a new Bosch unit. Add in an oil change, air filter and basic tuneup service and she's back on the road. Odo still busted, now tracking mileage by number of gallons of fuel consumed - coming up on 300K any day now. To further confirm why I love this car, two taxi drivers at BOS offered to buy the car on the spot, knowing full well what it was and the (decent) condition it was in.
