Re: [diesel_mercedes] A Thing Of Beauty (radiator)

Cleaning out the yard at scrap prices IS making money!  From what I've seen, at least around here, the "salvage" yards are really scrap yards.  They make their margins on buying for low to nothing, and selling scrap metal.  Anything they make from having people come in, pay an entrance fee, pull their own parts and then buy these parts from them, is gravy.  Nothing sits for more than 4, 5 weeks, tops.

Our older California junkyards are going bye-bye too, like most junkyards they refuse to sell at reasonable prices and every so often simply clean out the yard at scrap price instead of making money .

Well ;

So far I've only ever seen two W123's with the outer dash removed, it's still quite a dig to get to the evaporator after that .

I'm currently waiting to see if they guy I bought seat belts for, will come through or I get stiffed once again .

I stick with the self service yards because that other B.S. you mentioned raises prices while simultaneously makes it impossible to save older stuff .

? You're a Fleet Manager now ? .

Wow, tough job .

 Yes, I do know, but was hoping there might be a car with the dash already pulled out. And yes, I grew up in junk yards. Thing is, running a modern yard is so different. There is terrific overhead. One nice thing is the network they have now. Most major parts are inventoried and can be procured through this network. but it all costs.
Believe me, I know. An am service manager for one of the largest cab companies in Wisconsin. It pays to buy recycled!

When I ran a junkyard, we sold everything fast, very fast ~ it was of course old VW's, only air cooled and  back when parts were in huge demand yet we didn't gouge nor sit on anything, it all was for sale cheaply to the fist person with cash .

I hope you know how difficult it is to reach that AC evaporator ! .

That's one thing we lack here is good old junk yards. The last ones got
closed a few years ago. Mercedes were never plentiful here anyways. Are
any of those cars far enough apart to get to the air conditioner
evaporators? Mine has a huge hole in it.
