[diesel_mercedes] Re: Looking for vegetable oil source in the SF Bay area.

Actually I helped an owner swap an old trap out with a new one. Also helped with a/c system (bought him a filter and installed it). Little stuff like that, it's a two-way street...

As a gift, I would suggest a little Nebo Edge flashlight, everyone loves 'em. They're about $10 on ebay

Re: [diesel_mercedes] HUGE oil leak!

Check your oil cooler hoses. The same thing happened to me with my 300SD.

Well..

I think (hope) it's done..

Picked it up tonight-- dropped it at a buddy's who's currently an "underemployed" autoworker.. They're re-tooling his plant or the replacement for the Jeep Liberty... He's got "time on his hands.."

For the record, thanks to Tom @Mercedes Classic.. Didn't realize our group got a discount. Dear God with what I spent it made a difference.

I think, this is the "list" of what I bought/had done.

Both front/rear flex discs on the driveshaft.. Likely still OEM..
Rear shock/spring replacement with SDL springs.
Both real wheel bearings replaced.. Mine was trashed, and acutally needed housing replacement.
Parking brake pad replacement..
Control arm bushing replacement..
and Both halfshafts were rebooted with "mercedessource" parts/instructions.

It seems like more was done.. The car obviously "sits" better now.

...he "charged" me $450 in labor..

I handed him $600, and know I still realistically owe him more. He's that good of friend..

..and NO, you CAN'T have his phone number!

Re: [diesel_mercedes] HUGE oil leak!

Well, not from a Mercedes - but from a straight 8 Pontiac, a 1954 Cadillac v8, and a few others, it were a rear seal or oil pan seal that frittered away, and well, when I punctured my w123 oil pan.  Add a gallon of cheap oil, put the car in the air, and get your flashlight out.

Just in time to fund a mechanic's Christmas shopping, I went to the downtown L.A. law library and left my 1981 300SD in the nice, underground, dry, clean parking lot for a few hours.  Drove across town on the I-10 freeway, running smooth and silent (as silent as a 300SD with 370,+++ miles will run).  Pulled into the Brentwood Village post office and noticed a steady stream of oil droplets on the pavement behind where I had turned into a parking spot.

Got home, pulled into the garage and let it sit for 1/2 hour. saw what was apparently a lot of oil on the floor.   Checked the oil, not a drop on the dipstick.  Moved the car to a new spot in the garage.  Next day there is a huge slick where oil has been flowing across the slope of the garage floor.

Drove the Caddy (hearse) to Court the next day, parked in the same library parking spot.  As I pulled in, I noticed that the space had a huge oil puddle, almost the length of the car.  When I got home, I looked at the spot where I had first parked the 300SD.  The oil slick there also looked almost car length.

It appeared as if oil were dumping out of the back of the engine and flowing along the drive shaft where it then dropped onto the ground, the length of  the drive shaft.

This is completely new.  Although it promises to be a messy job, I think that I'll put it up on jack stands and see if I can spot where the leak is.

Anyone out there have a similar experience with the 617 engine?  Sudden development of a major leak toward the rear of the engine?

Recent work includes changing two glow plugs, a valve adjust, and replacing two of the rubber mounts for the air cleaner.  No sign of leak from any of those jobs.

    ANY suggestions gratefully welcomed.

Tom,

Strange, the usual leaks appear when running: oil cooler lines, turbo
return, filter canister, etc.
With that much oil coming out, it should be obvious when you get underneath.
Glad you didn't run it completely dry and have to get a donor....

- eat at the restaurant where you want a favor
- compliment their food
- become a regular
- tip them well
- clean up the area better than it was before you came
- give them a Christmas present
- make the favor a sideline to the relationship

RE: [diesel_mercedes] HUGE oil leak!

I had a 1967 Volvo 122S do this due to the seal on the oil pump feed tube. The oil pickup+pump “blade assembly” hangs in the pan and pressurized oil runs up a separate tube into the block. The seal between the top of that tube and hidden in the block was not replaced during a complete engine rebuild. That seal partially failed blowing oil back at the rear felt crankshaft oil seal.

So, I will opine yours may be an oil leak at the back of the block. Hopefully it is just a loose line back there on the outside of the engine. Bill in Oregon
