[diesel_mercedes] Rebuilt Starter

Yeabbutt ;

Throw good money at it ~ not all rebuilts have new solenoids and this is the weak point in every Bosch starter ever made.....

Just started driving my 240 4-spd.(my main 240) and the starter is kicking out again. Does anyone live in cold climate with this symptom?  While cranking when cold(defined mid 30's and down), starter gear kicks out and then sounds like its eating a ring gear. Its a Shucks lifetime, re-built Bosch and I think they must not replace the big spring. When the car is warm it starts on the first pop. Yea, should of would of could of bought a Mercedes, but I had enough of Mercedes dealers with my 190D. Max  P.S. starters are a whole lot easier on non turbos to replace.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Slow battery recovery.

OK, I was thinking my weak charging isn't the alternator either.
I might check the connections on the back of the alternator, to see if
that helps.

The hydrometer showed one cell just into the red (bad), and the rest on
the line between good and OK.

I need a new battery.

Now I'm checking my Toyota truck, which has an older battery.

The new alternator is slightly better by .2vdc I'm charging the battery now as with all this screwing around and load testing it really drained my battery to the point of not starting. I'm hoping the charge will bring the battery to normal and the very weak Mercedes charging system can then work it's best. If this doesn't work I'll get a new battery. If that doesn't work then there is a wire somewhere with a loose connection under the dash I just wish would be easy to find. It is still taking a long time to come up to 13.7vdc. Way too long. I would think it should instantly go to 14.4 volts. It's not. Lawrence RHOdes

When I start my 240 4spd., it instantly goes to 14.4V. Not sure of the alternator, still the one which came with the car. Max

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Rebuilt Starter

These are Bosch branded starters. Mud is almost gone. I have graded most of my driveway except for the last mud spot. Now in Sacramento for a week. Max

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Digest Number 6144

At this point if the battery charge doesn't work we will have to use Ohm's Law to find the problem.  If voltage goes down something else is going up namely resistance.  Something in the wire going to the starter is bad.  Causing heat from the resistance causing the battery not to come up to voltage.  I notice when the car is really cold the charging system works better.  When it warms up is when I have the trouble.  So a bad connection when warm.  What could that be?  Lawrence Rhodes
