I believe also noted when I ordered the replacments that it said fits both passengers and drivers.

Sounds like you are on your way.

I think it was on the earlier cars where there was a right and left  axle.  As I remember there was a very light thread pattern on the inner hub diameter that was supposed to lead the oil that found its way into the surface of the hub back into the trans.

Interesting.  Less than 400 units away from the later pump.

SO, I looked up mine.  It's: 009514.

The SD was MB's most popular model in '79.  I wish I had the Nitzke book here to look up the production numbers, but I think it was something close to 18,000.

Looks like the breaking point for that pump on the 1979 MY VINs is to 000001 thru 010481 (last 6).  Mine is 010092.

Yes, I have.  For the diaphragm pump;

http://www.autohausaz.com/search/product.aspx?sid=ebdt1u553h1fmwj3behids55&makeid=800016@Mercedes&modelid=1192913@240D&year=1974&cid=18@Electrical%20%26%20Vacuum&gid=11818@Vacuum%20Pump%20Repair%20Kit

And, apparently, the kit for the piston pump is now available, if in limited supply:

http://www.autohausaz.com/search/product.aspx?sid=ebdt1u553h1fmwj3behids55&makeid=800016@Mercedes&modelid=1193992@300SD&year=1980&cid=18@Electrical%20%26%20Vacuum&gid=11818@Vacuum%20Pump%20Repair%20Kit

(Mr. Bergsma may wish to update his information....)

For me, I prefer to rebuild than replace, and, since the diaphragm kits are currently MUCH cheaper than the piston kits, the older design is better....

Mark, did you ever find a rebuild kit for that pump?  I can find one for the 1980 SD all day long.  Nothing for this oddball on the '79.

When 1 or 2 glow plugs are are feeling poorly, the light can go off. If it has been more than 1 year (or 2) since they were changed, I would purchase a set to have on hand for the big day. Check your fuses too though and wiggle your wires to make sure your nuts are tight.

We have a 1984 300D. Glow plug light is now not coming on. Car does start right up. Where do I start in trying to fiqure this out.

thanks, Nick

I know it's hard to bend over with tight nuts and all that, but you should check the plugs for continuity at least.  Pull the plug on the relay box and check from each of the internal contacts to ground.  Keep in mind that there are 6 contacts and only 5 glow plugs.  Or. if you can manage to bend over far enough, check the continuity between the electrical connection on the glow  plugs and ground - with the plug in the relay box disconnected.  If you have continuity, the plugs should be working.

Isn’t what the little blue pill is for?  Be careful though.  If it lights up for more than 4 hours you need to take it in for service.

The bulb gets weaker after 65 and can burn out completely after 70.
