[diesel_mercedes] Re: Rear Window and Windshield replacement seals

I don't _EVER_ buy Chinese rubber unless there's no alternative .

It's crap plain and simple and IT WILL LEAK from new then rot and crack in a few short years .

Send your VIN to Tom @ The Classic Center and get a nice package in the mail in short order .

Grommets that FIT and LAST  because  the bitterness of low quality remains long after the sweetness  of low price has been forgotten .

FYI- 1981 grey mkt 300D.  It's pretty nice but it will begin to rot soon if i don't do this.  I could also use one of those rubber corners for the rear bumper if any of you all happen to have one laying around.  one fell off the other day, ugh, driver'd side.
Thank you, oh lovers of the old car.

Hi,
I'm not having any luck undoing the guide
rod mount from the guide rod on my 84 300SD. Tried
PBBlaster, Kroil and a lot of heat. It won't budge. I
thought the path of least resistance here would be to just
get a new guide rod. I've tried ordering from the usual
suspects but apparently it's "no longer
available". Anybody have a used one or can Tom Hanson
find one at MB?
thanksDavid

RE: [diesel_mercedes] Need guide rod for 1984 300SD

Hi Bill,

thanks for the research. Redline was out of stock. Shoreline took the order so I can only hope. Several times I've ordered and then a few hours to a few days later got an email saying the part was NLA.
Good suggestion with the oil. We tried heat last weekend and no help. That usually works for me. I'll try the heat and oil this weekend.

One ‘solution’ I found for getting it apart.  Bill

Answer:
Warm the threaded union with a propane torch (won't hurt the metal).
When it is as warm as possible, douse it with SAE 30 oil until it is cold.
Soak a shop rag in SAE 30 oil, and wrap it around the thread union, tightly wrap the rag in Saran. ™ Cling wrap.
Allow the threaded union to soak for two or more days.
Then try again.

Hi Bill,

Checking further, it's not in stock with Niemoeller. I'd rather get one stateside, if possible. My 300SD is a W126 but I believe it's the same part for the W123. I have to do the same job on my 81 300D so I was hoping to get a few of these guide rods in case I have more trouble getting the others loose.

thanks,

David

RE: [diesel_mercedes] Need guide rod for 1984 300SD

Hi Bill,

No, that is the guide rod mount. The guide rod screws onto the end of that and then connects to the lower control arm under the spring perch.

It's one of these but Pelican doesn't have it in stock anymore. They can order it from MB at about $170+.

RE: [diesel_mercedes] Need guide rod for 1984 300SD

Yes, impressive, but none of those on the 3 pages of stuff are the part I'm looking for. I need the guide rod not the guide rod bushing. The parts supply houses I've called all come back with the guide rod bushing instead of the guide rod.
