Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: 1980 300SD will not turn over after short/long drive

If it was starting out in second gear, what is the fix?

It shouldn't be any
slower than the '81.  At least, not by much. Is the
turbo spooling up?  They can get gummed up if it's not
driven hard enough.
Also, is
your starting out in first gear?.  My '79 does, and it
can easily keep up with any other 5-cylinder
SD.
The jumpy temp
guage is likely a spotty connection for the temperature
guage sending unit in the head.

Thanks to everyone for their comments, suggestions
and advice. Finally got around to replacing the neutral
safety switch (had 40 mph winds here in southern Arizona the
last two days) and drove it to town and back (30 miles) and
everything seems to be working fine. Shut it off two
different times and it started right up. I will take
Nate's advice and replace the solenoid. Nate, we just
love the car and almost everything works, at least most of
the time. Still have to tackle the jumping temp gauge, right
side windows (motors work but do not operate the regulator)
and the super slow acceleration. This car is much slower
than our 81 300SD. Cleaned the banjo bolt to the ALDI valve
but not any better. At least it gives me something to do
with all my spare time. HA HA. Thanks again and you can be
assured that I will have more questions/problems.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Rear End Failure

I never did check the ratios but we swapped a 123 into a 126 with acceptable results.  In other words the 126 didn't whine anymore and the person driving the 126 stopped whining and didn't complain about any relative difference in performance.

Oops ~

Apparently I've neglected to routinely check the final drive oil in my beloved if battered Diesel Sports Coupe , it began to make a singing noise a while back and I thought the tranny I'd had rebuilt was maybe going to fail , in time I got off my duff , jacked up and safely blocked the car , discovered the fill plug wasn't loose but it wasn't tight enough to seal fully either so most of the gear oil had leaked out and spread thinly over the underside of the trunk , up behind the bumper and so on .

I filled it and added a small Harbor Freight Rare Earth Magnet to the filler plug (they're stronger) and drove on a week , then last night I decided to properly drain the final drive "Pumpkin" and see what's what .

I discovered the filler plug was still weeping a little bit , someone else had mentioned he'd needed both feet and a cheater pipe on his longest 1/2" drive Flex Handle (Misnomer : Breaker Bar) to get the filler plug out so this time when I closed it up I not only wire brushed and chemically cleaned the threads Hosp[ital Clean and flipped the aluminum crush washer over , I pulled mightily on the FlexHandle until that bugger _stopped_ tightening ~ I was worried I'd strip the threads but it's a steel plug in an iron housing so no worries I guess .

Anyway , pic. # 1 is the plug when I removed it .

Pic. # 2 is both drain and fill plugs cleaned with rare earth magnets ready to go back in .

I allowed the Pumpkin to drain a long time them used a flat blade screw driver to scrape out more , then I stuffed a clean rag in the drain hole and twirled it 'round a bit , I'll be draining and filling it again in less than 1,000 miles and the pumpkin it kaputi anyways so I'm just trying to nurse it along until I find a good used Pumpkin in a Junk Yard .

Does anyone have the Spec. sheets to tell me what final drive ratio a W123 Diesel Coupe has ? .

And , is it the same as any W-123 sedan ? .

Knowing this will make my search easier , maybe a gasser or S Kalsses will have the same ratio .

Stay tuned for MORE long winded boring Nate's Junk yard Adventures ! .

-Nate

RE: [diesel_mercedes] Rear End Failure

We had a 1948 Willis Jeep station wagon my mother drove from Corvallis, Oregon to Los Angeles in three days; 1954.

Remember what I-5 looked like in 1954?

The oil leaked out of the diff the first day so it whined the next two days; 45mph the whole way with three kids.

Her nerves were shot at the end but the flathead 4-banger didn’t let us down.  Bill in Oregon

p.s. do you have a source of sawdust for Your diff?  J

[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Economy Check '84 300CD Automatic

Low fuel lamp went on @ 5?? miles , (sorry I forgot to jot it down about 540) , I got up early this morning and ran it hard as I could to Castaic , Ca. , it ran out of breath @ 107 MPH , odd as it's gone *much* faster before .

On  one downhill stretch it was really humming along and puffed out a medium sized soft black cloud of fuel , I assume this was the last of the tiny bits of crud that have been causing the injectors to ' drool ' and cause so much smoking , we'll soon find out .

Anyway , whenever traffic allowed I pinned the throttle and let it run out , when the fuel ran dry and it died I was of course passing a long line of Big Rigs pulling into a Cal Trans Weigh Station , I was able to carefully coast over and between a couple rigs then find a wide bit of pavement safely to the right of the fog line , I stopped and popped the hood and trunk , took off the clear plastic intake screen and was pleased to see the black chunks I saw in it yesterday had apparently been dissolved by the Startron and worked through the system as it supposed to happen .

I still had a very few black bits in there I blew out and re installed it .

I pumped the primer pump until I felt serious resistance , saw no bubbles in the dark plastic hard fuel pipe leading up from the transfer pump to the secondary filter and an injector buzz as it popped , cycled the glow plugs and started it up , ran it briefly @ 3,000 RPM's until it stopped missing , let off the throttle and of course , before I could get my seat belt fastened it died and refused to restart again .

Popped the hood and re primed it again , this time it started quickly and I held it full throttle until it bumped the Rev. limiter @ 5,000 RPM's for 30 seconds , then I ever so carefully waited for a lull in traffic , merged and drove straight to a Chevron Station where I filled it with 22.346 gallons of dark yellow Diesel Fuel  ~ this crap looks like BEER f'chrissakes .

I may have to stop using Chevron fuels for a while .

On the plus side , it never got over 82* C and as soon as I'd pull over it dropped right down to 79* C , that's nice , soon I'll do my annual cooling system flush and fill .

So , I'm now in Valencia , Ca. having gotten 26.2 MPG's out of this last tank full , including the over dose of Startron and a fair lot bit of full throttle acceleration or freeway driving uphills and down ("ItalianTune-Up") .
