Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re : O.T. Peugot's ~ DELETE NOW

I rode in the neighbor's 504 a couple times as a teen, but never paid attention to how comfortable the seats were.  I was about to look at a 240D a few years back that actually had its seats swapped out for Peugeot seats.  The material wasn't indestructible like MB-Tex, I do remember that well.

[diesel_mercedes] The bear facts.

Some of you may recall that a year ago I was offered a 300D wagon, up in the hills in bear country. Well I let it go last year, because the man was up to his ears in legal stuff (pot patch and bear feeding) A month ago I called him & he told me that he had sent the car to a wrecker, but did not know which one. Today we started driving around to wreckers looking for the car, we found it. Now for the bad stuff, the wrecker loaned it to a charity, who sold for a $ or 2 the privilege of whacking the car with a sledge hammer. There is no glass anywhere, the radio is gone, and the body is pretty beat up. Under the hood looks ok, seats not bad, I can get the parts I need pretty reasonably, and have about 1 month before they crush it. I understand the engine/trans is good it has the same style wheels (cannot remember the name) that Nate got painted a few years back. they look good, bumpers were beaten off the car. If any one needs some bits, shoot me a note, I want the cruise mod, the window crank the antenna if it matches, the water pump and other odments.
It is hot here & I do not think I am up to (senior citizen here) taking stuff like the vacuum pump off, radiator is busted in the same place mine was. When you think about the car, just remember that if it was easy and satisfying to whack a part with a hammer, it got whacked.
Nate if you still need a passenger side window mechanism let me know.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re : O.T. Peugot's ~ DELETE NOW

Many, many years ago I test drove a new Jag, man those seats hugged you...but they darn sure better for the $83K price tag.  Then a few years later I test drove a used BMW, loved those seats too and the hour plus ride home, didn't want to take it back, but price was waaaay to high.  Dealer was shocked when I wouldn't play his BS game, stood up, grabbed the paperwork out of his hand ripped it to shreds and told them in no uncertain terms they darn sure better go get my rent car NOW!

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: I thought I was feeling like the Maytag Repair Man.

Well, first, there was the price.  In 1964, a new 404 wagon could be had for just under $2000.  Eight years later, the 504 wagon, with automatic transmission, was nearly $5400 in Denver.  The era of the high-quality, low-price French car was gone.

Secondly, the 404 was indestructible.  It never broke down.  Yeah, ours went through 3 speedometer cables in 85,000 miles, and I can remember coolant gushing from under the dash while passing through Dallas one December (heater hose cracked), but nothing that sidelined the car and required towing.  (He just re-routed heater hoses, by-passed the heater, and refilled the radiator with melted ice water from the ice chest in the back.  That got us to the nearest garage.)  That car a took a family of five (six after 1969) all over North America; more than once each to San Diego/Tijuana, San Francisco, Calgary/Edmonton, El Paso/Juarez, Washington DC, NYC, Pittsburg, Cleveland area (Massillon, actually), Montreal, Jacksonville every Christmas...  damn thing never broke!

The 504 always had something going out.  Something in the induction, I don't remember exactly what it was (manifold?  One of the carburetors?) cracked and had to be replaced.  It took about a week to get the part in, and it was expensive, too.  The front struts went out far too soon.  The transmission (a ZF unit) needed a major repair; that incident required an expensive tow back to Denver from Cheyenne.  That was the last time it was driven anywhere outside of the Denver area.  (Peugeot dealers, or anyone else who would work on them, were few and far between.  So, the cars HAD to be reliable, which wasn't a problem for the 404s or 403s.)  It never really ran well; the French were still trying to get a handle on the then recent US emissions requirements, so it would stumble and die at intersections on warm-to-hot days.  The dealer (Carl Bartz Motors) never figured that one out.  When it started using oil at 46,000 miles, my father was told the engine needed rebuilt.  Two weeks later, he sold the car for well below market value, and that was the last Peugeot he ever bought.  To this day, whenever the subject is brought up, he will only say he wished he'd bought 3 or more 404s, stored them and used them as needed.  He would be driving one today, if he could buy it new....

He's never bought diesel anything, so, a 504 diesel may well have been a much different animal.  It wouldn't have been subject to the emissions requirements of the gassers, that's for sure.  Even better would be one of the 404 diesels.  Best of both worlds!

Re: [diesel_mercedes] getting home

OMG that's hilarious!  It even LOOKS like our farm!  No that's more like ME when I come up the driveway when it's wet from rain.   Can't understand what he said...need a translator.

I only bring home 100lbs of raw chicken at a time for the dogs/cats.  No commercial food for our gang!  Ick.

I'm sure you are sick of crutches.  But at least you are alive and getting around..somewhat.  You should have really strong arms by now.  When my dad had his foot amputated (thanks to the VA "forgetting" to tell him he need the same surgery on left leg as they did on right leg when he had a toe amputated decades earlier) he got really amazing forearms from the crutches.

Hang in there Max.  You'll be out running all of us in no time.

LOL!!!  Yes I do have plenty of spare parts...some new that were purchased incorrectly and I'm too lazy to return them...well, I'm using Kevin's excuse "I may need it some day". :)

Egads, west TX is HOT, DRY and smelly (oil rigs)...IMO, those that live there call it MONEY...I suppose if I had a working oil rig on my farm I'd call it money too!  Hmmmm wonder what is under ground here?

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re : O.T. Peugot's ~ DELETE NOW

Had a 505 diesel wagon, 'till I got my 300SD.  Sold the Pug it was obvious that the Merc was a better car.  BUT, I could load a bundle of 10' mild steel tubing in there, and close the tailgate and drive off, once put 4 255x16.5 pickup tires and wheels in there, drove away.

2.3 liter turbo diesel that was evidently immortal, but normal engine maintenance was a problem. Once had to remove the radiator an everything near it, to replace the water pump.  One of those cars where if it needs work, you think it better to sell the car..

A this is a no whining zone .

I had a 1976 504 four door sedan , it was of course , a typical crazy French car but , it was also a very nice car in spite of bad paint .

It seems they decided (ah those French , who knows ?) that in spite of the extra cost and complexity , they'd use _TWO_ separate carbys on a tiny four cylinder engine instead of a 2 bBarrel carby like the rest of the World...

Naturally one carby siezed throwing everything out of kilter , I was lucky and found an identical car in Brian's favorite Pick-A-Part in PO_mona & bought the carby and it's *special* (only fits one year of a low poduction Foreigin car) cable , installed it and all was well , it ran and drove perfectly , the seats were more comfy then _Mercedes_ seats if you can believe that , I'd paid $125.00 for it and sold it to two Mexican Sisters who were broke & foolish , they loved it to death and took almost three years to kill it by total neglect .

IIRC , it never missed a beat but they ran it out of oil .

I dunno ;

You and I are not in fact Lonely Hearts but _someone_ is (as well as a sexual freak apparently) so I though I'd just toss that in to make sure he's happy.....most folks like casseroles , no ? .

Just ignore the junk engine for now , concentrate on the farm , jobs and so on .

If anyone asks about it , say it needs work (no details necessary) and you want $150.00 for the whole thing .

Then grab any green you see , don't let them take it apart until it's paid for .

Are you yet aware you don't have an SD ? your pictures show a W-123 , the better , less complicated chassis , my favorite.

I'm thinking mayhap your 300D is in fact , avery good example how how badly an old Mercedes Diesel can be abused yet still provide transportation and in fact , may be upon the cusp of returning to life yet .

Too bad there's no one close by to tackle the turbo ol drain leak .

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Junk Engine Worth & Old ShopTruck

That was the deal ;

I saved it from the crusher , rebuilt it to do *one* Interstate job (which it did admirably) , putting over $3,700.00 worth of Jobber priced parts into it so I really didn't want to scrap it .

Happily , after all was said & done (it got sold , impounded & I was too foolish/cautious to spring it from the Car Jail) , my son just saw it happiy driving around the next Town East of me , current tags on it and all shiny with a smiling driver so someone got one hell of a good deal , I wonder if they even know .

Depending on how much parts are still on it , Trish *might* be able to sell some parts off it ? .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: I thought I was feeling like the Maytag Repair Man.

This is not an easy job. You have to move the other belts which are all in the way of the alternator belt. You have to learn how to adjust all the belts. After this you know the adjustment points on all your under hood goodies. Not fun when you don't have the book but possible with a strong light. Been there done that. Lawrence Rhodes.....

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Turbo gasket kit

OK thanks Nate.  I didn't think that's what I needed.  It does help.  Now to decide if (Kevin)  fixes it or I sell it.  Waiting to hear from Chuck about his car, how low he'll go on price and what's up with the radiator.  Also of course need to go look at his car.  Working a p/t chef job now, not sure the hours yet.  Thought I was working f/t time, but they only used me for 5 hrs yesterday.  That's the way it goes in the food industry.

NO ! .

That gasket kit is for the turbo proper , what you need is the oil return tube seals , I clicked on the left illustration and it's guide # 173 , they don't service that but save the illustration and show it to other partshause' & they'll get what you need .

You'll need to remove the lower front sump (oil pan) , I was able to re use my old gasket as Mercedes uses really good quality gaskets that reguire NO GLUE nor RTV .

I hope this helps .

BTW : if anyone in Cali. orders parts from this place , please let me piggyback two of the old style primer pumps onto your order ~ I need them badly .

This place has lots of printable exploded diagrams for your old Mercedes .
