It IS amazing.  And not just that.  There used to be Ford Escorts with Mazda diesel engines, Lincolns with BMW made diesels, Chrysler K-cars with Mitsubishi-built diesels... anyone know that the Jeep XJ/MJs (Cherokee, Wagoneer and Comanche) could be optioned with a Renault-built 2.2 turbo diesel from '84 to '87?  At the altitudes around here, it was the most powerful option as the Chevy-suppled 2.8 V6 gasser, already a piece of crap, was completely emasculated in the thin air.  That Chevy engine was the worst engine ever put into a Jeep....

America had quite a love affair with diesels in the late 70s/early 80s, before the 5.7 litre GM diesel showed how wrong it can go when a company tries to make a diesel out of a gasser.  Even vaunted Mercedes-Benz, considered the leader in diesel-engined passenger cars, managed to create a lemon in the 350SDL, notoriously dubbed "the rod bender"....  OUCH!

My father bought a first-year Chevette in 1976.  My high school buddies got real excited when I told them we had a new 'Vette.  They were mighty disappointed when they first saw what we actually got.  It became the "Shove-it" shortly after....

I wonder how solid the car is , that's a lot of miles for such a cheaply built car .

I like Chevettes , we called them " 1/4Vette " when we had them in our Municipal Fleet , gasoline models only , tiny , under powered City only cars by design but they thrashed along just fine and as usual , GM's AC was the bees knees .

Nate:

I was under the impression that the fuel pressure in the IP galley was due to the check valve on the back of the pump that has a banjo bolt and returns the fuel to the tank. I'm talking about the check valves on the delivery valves. If that is what you are talking about then I am at a loss to explain why. Either way 10 psi should be enough to refill the individual cylinder pumps. Perhaps a check valve and a small accumulator between the fuel filter and the inlet to the IP would smooth out the fluctuations.

On a different note I am now noticing a return of the/a weak cylinder when the engine gets hot. Is it possible that these check valves in the delivery pipes can stick or otherwise not seal properly when they heat up? It's easy enough for me to check. just swap out the valves one at a time until the problem goes away. But that's for tomorrow.

By the way, in my cleaning I found another 6 injectors. I will test them tomorrow too.

I was fiddling with the car to - day and installed a liquid filled American made pressure gauge between the fuel filter and the I.P. to check the transfer pressure .

With the old valve installed and a stretched spring I got 10 ~20 PSI fluctuating rapidly @ idle , revving it up it went to 23 PSI and stayed there , still vibrating the needle .

I then swapped out the old valve for a new one from Ma 'Benz and the idle pressure was 0 ~ 10 PSI and went up to nearly 20 PSI when I revved it , same flickering of the gauge's needle .

I don't know if this is normal or not ? .

Guys:

I am getting rid of some parts and don't want to just scrap them.

So if you will pay shipping and otherwise cover my out of pocket and I will ship them to you.
Otherwise they are feed stock for the recycle industry.

I'm guessing the SD steering wheel and maybe the tranny switch will go fast.

But I gotta clean up the driveway.
