Yes ;

This works out O.K. *IF* you can mange to not get any wrinkles in the shiny tape .

If you drive much at night , consider buying some used headlights .

When I were a poor(er) young Lad , I almost hit children twice at night when driving with poor headlights .

While you're pondering all this , can you take & post up some pix of your headlamps as they look now ? .

DO NOT include them in list messages ! .

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Topic Drift : DELETE NOW !

Interestingly , although I grew up in the 1950 & 1960's when Fiat's American products were , uh , um , less than perfect for our driving needs ,it turns out that , like those whacky French cars , once you got your mind around they're -different- in construction , build and maintenance , they're pretty good little cars , super cheap on the gasoline and *very* fun to drive , even the strange ones like the rear
engined 500 / 600's or Multiplias .

Back in the day I had friends who drove and loved them and learned how to keep them running 'On The Cheap ' in spite of seriously heavy use and abuse .

Tom had one once , a cute little thing I *think* was a Coupe , I got to ride in it a few times and it was fast & fun if fairly noisy .

I'm quite glad I never was sucked in by Fiat , Renault or those whacky but very good Poo-Joe's I worked on in the 1970's when I worked for The Tebault Brothers Garage ~ a pair of oddball but highly talented French Mechanics who loved all French Cars .

They taught me much too , especially Adolf who taught me that being rude and abrasive , only drives people away from you.....

Jay , OTOH , took the time to teach me much about not only how to fix this or that but the proper attitude if you want to fix Machines and not go crazy or wind up a hate filled old man like so many Mechanics do (oops) .

I wish I could thank him now .

I was skeptical of the paint & you gave me all the caution to the wind I needed.

Since posing my spray chrome question, I found some info on aluminum taping the bowls. I've seen quite a few people who swear by the results after buffing to a shine. Don't mean to beat a dead horse but has anyone ever tried the aluminum tape method?

' Chrome paint ' , simply put , _isn't_ .

It's regular old silver paint with a fancy label and a higher price .

If you use it , you will ruin the reflector and be really pi$$ed off to boot for having been taken advantage of .

Yes , I tried it when I was 14 or so , I thought it looked cool on the label and had a rusty chrome bumper I ever so carefully cleaned , sanded and prepped.....

After it was partially shiny chrome (the old stuff I'd polished) and partially matte finish silver paint....

Grrrr.....

YMMV

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Bulb - In Headlight Service

I don't know the '92's but I do know the various replaceable bulb head lights .

Yes , it all comes apart and there are gaskets every step of the way , usually re usable if you're gentle .

Are you 1,000 % _CERTAIN_ the dirt is inside the lens ? this is rare , most of the time the exterior of the lens gets pitted or simply yellows if they're plastic .

Either can usually be greatly improved by polishing , the plastic ones are easy to damage by heat buildup from a spinning drill motor polishing , I do all plastic lens cleaning and service by hand .

There are cleaning and polishing kits for both types .

Never , _EVER_ touch the reflector ! it is silvered and the only correct method of cleaning is to use Lamp Black and cotton wadding , it's still super easy to scratch & dull it so don't touch it unless you're willing to gamble $1,000 or so for new ones after you've ruined the reflectors *so* badly a Cop will give you a fix it ticket in broad daylight , lights off , no foolin' .

The bulbs too , must always be handled with extreme caution as one tiny partial finger touch will cause rapid failure ~ never trust a bulb is clean out of the box ! always use clean tissue (Lens or Toilet) to wipe the entire glass part of the bulb just before you put it in the hole ~ older 'Benz you'll have to plug it into the wiring harness before inserting the lamp into the head light and reflector assy. ,this is where most tiny finger brushes occur .

BTW : I've saved a few antique reflectors by having them chromed ~ be aware this isn't optically pure like the original silvering was but it's a do - able thing when faced with ruined , unobtanium parts .

I also assume that there should be some kind of gasket or seal between the lens and housing. I've found such seal for other models but not for mine. Any help? Thanks.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Two Problems. Air in the lines & bad tank sender.

i'm assuming you have a TD wagon?

you remove that giant plug on the bottom and the tank drains and you remove the screen

706 540-3285 if you want to discuss

i do it all the time on mine (i run WVO)

i use a giant nut and bolt to fit it

could be sae or metric if it about fits

then you can clean the screen gently ... it's plastic mesh but they clean well

Two Problems.  Air in the lines & bad tank sender.

I have a TD(Touring Diesel) I felt around the output of the tank and can't feel
any bolts for a tank filter/screen. Took off the fuel line and not a drip. Out
of fuel with indicating half a tank. There is a big Allen bolt on the bottom of
the tank. What is that for. I'm assuming I have to tear out part of the back
of the wagon to access the sender.

Next problem. I see foaming fuel and air in the line to the injector. I also
see foaming fuel in the filter. I recently put new o rings on the secondary
fuel filter shaft. Is there a torque rating for this bolt? I had a loose banjo
bolt on top of the filter that caused trouble. Fixed. I have new return lines
but I notice shiny fluid on the #1 injector. The return lines are clean with no
fuel on them. Can an injector leak air? I'm on return & the system won't purge
the air fast enough for the car to run smooth. I do run veggie oil and use a
looped system. I switched to return to purge air but it's not happening fast
enough for the car to run smooth. I guess I could put the system under pressure
somehow and see the leak. Maybe I'll take a bicycle inner tube apart and make a
way to use compressed air to do it. Lawrence Rhodes..

thanks,

xx rick
