O.K. , well & good .
Now to cases : do not remove the fuel tank , get some really big open oil pans or containers , like 5 gallons each , wipe them Hospital clean with clean rags , jack up the back of the car & block it safely (means NO CINDER BLOCKS !!) then crawl underneath it and look up just above & to the right of the " Pumpkin " ~ you'll see a BIG (46MM) hexagonal thing with a fat rubber hose connected to it , follow this rubber hose to the left & forward where it'll be clamped to a steel , 7 MM hose pipe that leads to the front of the car ~ take some time to clean this hose and where it attaches to the pipe as well as the big 46 MM nut looking thing and the hole it sticks out of . get them REALLY clean of Road Grime or you'll be sorry later .
Drag your several drain pans under the car , pile some fairly clean rags on your chest & loosen the 7MM hose at the front end where it attaches to the steel pipe and twist it before pulling it loose ~ you'll be rewarded with a gusher of Diesel Fuel that *MUST* be 7MM round , as big as the hose it's _gushing_ (NOTE : not dribbling nor simply running out) out of , this gusher cannot be stopped so remember to have 20 gallons of open containers so you can slide each empty one in as the Diesel Fuel _GUSHES_ out , all over you , the bottom of the car , the Garage floor , etc. , etc. ~ BIG SAFETY WARNING !!!! you'll be hard pressed to light the spilled Diesel Fuel on fire but , it's still a SERIOUS FIRE HAZARD !!!! .
O.K. ,. you're all done draining out the $50 worth of suspect Diesel Fuel ? good , now , cut the old hose off the big nut looking thing as close to the connector as you can , then use (only) a 46MM 6 point socket (VW Shops & Tool Rental Places have this) to unscrew the nut , _MORE_ Diesel Fuel and slimy , nasty Wes Craven Horror Movie typ slimy sludge will also come spraying down upon you , try to remember how much you wanted this car at this irritating juncture , the nut has on the inside the tank end of it , a screen you must look closely at , it's almost always covered with gunk , wipe it clean then wash it well in a bowl of gasoline and an old toothbrush until there's _nothing_ left sticking to it .
Now , use a pair of dykes to cut away the thin sheet metal crimp on the remaining tiny bit of hose on the 46MM plug/screen Assy. and VIOLA ! once you open the crimp and twist / slide the old rotted hose off , you'll be rewarded with a nice clean 7MM hose barb you can install 2' or so of new, DIESEL RATED 7mm fuel hose , your NAPA parts store will have it in stock . ask the nice Counter Man for a " Fuel Injection " hose clamp , it'll be a band typ instead of the normal crappy gear / screw typ that _WILL_ damage the new hose no matter what the Parts Counter Guy promises .
You're almost there , it's normal to have a largeish single air bubble in the clear fuel intake screen , just no stream of tiny bubbles leading into it as you rev. the engine .
Once the car is running ,you never , _EVER_ loosen the injector lines to bleed the system out ~ that's Bass - Ackwards , simply running the engine at 3,000 RPM's will self bleed it , if it still shakes & misses @ idle , check the return hoses (they're special too) and then re check the valve adjustment but since it already ran O.K. for a while , I'm betting there's a light at the end of your tunnel .
I've been out of town a few days, decided no computer this time , sorry for the late reply , I see the others here have guided you right .
I hope this helps , much more worthless but FREE Tech Help if you want it .
If the guy refuses to refund your $50 , save this as it's good to put in a bucket and clean parts with , once it's too nasty to clean anything it makes a dandy weed killer , just don't tell anyone you use it for that .

Well Max ;
It's a _BINZ_ Wagon , this pre dates the Universal Wagon by a goodly bit and if it's a rust free as it appears to be , for $10K it's a _STEAL_ .
Were I rich , I'd be on this like , like , well , like Nate on another old junker.....
Your old W-108 190D Sedan was just another old , slow Mercedes Diesel
albeit a really nice one I nearly bought .
This Wagon is super rare and will prolly be over restored & then hidden away never to grace The Highways & Byways again =8-( .

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Picture of Primer Pump
This is the newer style one , it takes 40 + pumps to bleed out the injectors .
Until you get this car running well , I'd suggest avoiding used engine parts .
Later on , once you're dialed in and know what & how to do things , your old engine and used parts pile will be invaluable , right now it'll make you chase your tail & go crazy , loose interest before long .

This one , I like ~ it's more honest .
I see some weird bidding action on it , flakes or shill bidders , it'll need a $40,000.00 + restoration to be right and then only worth $25K or so....
I like it a lot .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Nates new Mercedes.
O.K. , these W-123 Limos turn up from time to time , this one looks fishy to me ~ I see a poorly assembled dashboard with a poorly installed thin ABS cover and the right rear corner isn't right ~ tough to explain , Car People will see it .
The door bottoms all look rusty to me .
The original uphgolstery is badly sun faded and I see a few tiny rips , this means it's dead and ready to pop as soon as you try to press it into service .
I see it has the self leveling suspension , that's a plus , the NA engine isn't .
It looks like it was re sprayed with those crappy ghetto style chrome fender lips in place , always a bad thing .
Lack of under carriage pictures on any car from Florida usually means it's a rust bucket or crash rebuilt junker .
OTOH , if it's a good 'un , this is prolly the very best ' Family Truckster ' ever made....
I could go on but I won't .
It'd have to be under $5k for me to even go look at it .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Car wont shift into park
Kevlog,
It is probably the plastic bushing.
Trish was recently having this problem. She may can tell you the part number of the bushing.
Bobby
I have a 84 300d which has not been going into park for quite a while, i have to move it to neutral to start it, otherwise it drives great.
Any idea what this is? Is it the bushing or possibly the parking pawl? I brought it to aamco and they were useless. Thanks all for your help

[diesel_mercedes] axle will not go back in
I needed to replace a torn cv boot on my 81 126. Removed axle with no problem and removed the inner cv joint. Put on the new boot filled with grease and put the cv joint back on the axle. When I tried to put the axle back on the car, it would not fit. The axle is firmly seated in the rear end and the joints are collapsed as far as they will go but the axle will not clear the backing plate. I loosened the shock to see if I could get just a little more room. NOPE. It still will not fit. I have been messing with this for two days and am at a loss. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong or suggestions on what to do. HELP. Tom.

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Now air bubbles coming from tank!
Don't panic ;
It's just an air intake leak , very common .
Either you have the wrong size rubber hoses between the steel pipes and the injection pump or , you have normal incorrect ideal gear / screw typ hose clamps, neither are any good on Metric vehicles , now you see why .
Loosen the clamp and try to twist the hose ~ it should be difficult , if it's easy to twist on the steel fuel pipe or the plastic clear screen , it's the wrong size hose , you need Diesel Rated 7MM hose , not 5/16" crap .
Once in a while , the DPO (remember the kid you got it from?) screws 'round with the hose on the bottom of the fuel tank to the frame's steel fuel pipe , replace it as necessary & replace the gear/screw typ clamps with the proper band typ of clamps you cleverly grabbed @ Pick-A-Part.....
If the hand primer pump has a white(ish) plastic knob you need to turn to unlock the pump before using it , it's prolly worn out , replace the hand primer pump , the newer style ones have a much smaller black push knob you don't need to lock and unlock , I prefer the older white knob ones as they work much better and still show up in some partshaus' .
You're getting there , imagine you're resurrecting a 1931 Fordson Tractor that some Farmer abused for 50 years , it takes a fair bit to undo all the screwy & wrong things the DPO did before you have a nice old reliable , economical Mercedes Diesel on your hands .keep at it .
Nothing worth having , is easily gained .
