The obvious one is the NC - normally closed.  Makes sense - the relay would be used as a normally open and only supply power to the plugs when the relay is "picked".

Not sure what LA means.

31 may be power.

My DPO installed a Ford starter relay on mine and completely bypassed the original circuit - so I have to guess at how long to energize it.

A tip - with the old style plugs - when the back plug shorts out to the inside of the engine, it will burn out even the Ford relay.  So if your new rely burns out, check the plugs.  You may have to ream out the glow plug cavity.

Do not waste time trying to clean / fix / repair that worthless rheostat ! just use the two open holes to solder in a short jumper wire , trust me the Mercedes dash lights are never , _EVER_ too bright ! .

That it the Evil Klima I servo , as it's already bypassed , just carefully unplug it , you're *VERY* lucky it just hummed & ran the battery dead instead of catching the car on fire....

The cylindercal thing in front of that , is the auxilliary water pump , make sure it is unpluggs too , it has a simple two pin plug .

That's NOT a 300SD ! it's a 300D as the W-116 chassis 300SD's have the Evil Klima I servo nestled up against the firewall where it can do far more damaged when it fails (NOTE : _WHEN_ ~ not if)

it is a 84 300sd 126 I am going to unplug it this weekend. And see if it affects anything. the diagrams say it is an egr valve.

What year is this W-1216 ? or is it a W-116 ? .

This sounds like the Evil Klima I servo , unplugging it should stop your current drain .

What Tom said ! . we took a whole bunch of them apart and some are corroded beyond belief .

Just unplug the rectangular plug off the top , it has latching clips you have to spread a tiny bit before the plug pops loose .
