I've  had  replaced an '83  w123 windshield ... cost $300 for a pro-installation ... done in 2-3 hrs.

Dunno, but I bet I am the oldest poster.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Rubber Muffler Donuts

Brian,

I haven't heard a MMO joke from you in a awhile, and thought maybe that
you would sneak it in with the rubber donuts. Anyway, I should check
mine too, as it's been a few years.

They might have held on for another year, but I figured 3 years was a pretty good run. It is fall, so it is time for rehabbing all the maintenance stuff I have been putting off while the temps were 90-105F.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Windshield gasket replacement

+I've put a windshield in a 123.  Its not likely that you would break it unless you are extraordinarily inept.  However, it's not fun and having a second person on hand is a very good idea. If the seal is bad, just cut the face around the glass.  I'd definitely use a new gasket on any replacement.  On the other hand, paying an expert is definitely a good idea.  The price is usually worth it for the time you will spend.  On any windshield replacement that doesn't involve an insurance company.  Be sure that they know that you are paying for it personally and check as many sources as you can find.  Negotiate!

I think it's about time for me to swap out the gaskets on the windshield
and possibly back window on my 85 300D. I looked into adding flowable
silicone, but the gasket is pretty cracked and crumbly. The water is
channeling around the window and pouring onto the passenger floor.

The glass isn't really that bad(pitted). My 80 240D is a lot worse. I
would like to remove the glass and just replace the gasket. Has anyone
done this job? Successfully without snapping the glass?

Do I try this myself? Maybe hire a glass replacement service? I
wouldn't think that they would guarantee not breaking the glass. They
would make more $ if it did break.

My favorite junkyard owner says that he uses oven cleaner to eat the
gasket when he salvages glass. I've heard through work that it works on
a lot of epoxies also.

No, I don't have insurance on the car for free glass replacement if a
stone accidentally smashes it.

Thanks for any heads up.

Carl
