Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Garage Queen 240D Update-Updated

Hills ARE good! I had a '54 Chevy pickup that I drove for three years without a starter (did not have $$$ to fix). It "bumped" right off every time so I just had to watch where I parked!

You could buy my 240D automatic for the engine. It's got zero chain stretch. Starts better than my 4-spd.(in cold weather) with the documented Mercedes Benz factory engine. CAr runs great, transmission shifts perfect, good car, but I'm sellin all of em. Max

Re: [diesel_mercedes] OOPS !

Nate - and anyone else listening

Saw a cherry 1983 TD at the Ontario PAP this morning. Bad news = it was in the parking lot.  Good news = I accosted the driver who keeps it pristine, and he told me about ?Buy Rite? off the #60 fwy in Riverside & some scrap yards where MB's and TD's abound (his words, not mine).  Inside the Ontario PAP = no w123's, bunch of w126 gassers, a w115. Diesels were very, very, very non-existent.

saw dis fer sale;
what you maka dis?

1987 Mercedes-Benz Diesel Sedan 300SDL. Black. NOT RUNNING!!! Has some type of electrical short somewhere. Will start with a jump but will not keep running and won't restart without a jump. Brand new battery, new windshield wiper motor (just installed--never used). Low Mileage for its age -- only 277,661. Car is in fair physical condition. Good parts car or could be repaired by someone who knows electrical systems. Make an offer. Car will have to be towed. Car sold strictly "as is".

any suggestions?
if you can finder her original add on your own you are welcome to it, but i'd still be curious what all you sages get from yer tea leave and spit on scranbled chicken bones mixed with blood, eyes of newts and pickled egrets.

The cigar hose is the fuel return line.

If it IS indeed flooded, maybe you can try cranking with the supply ("cigar") hose clamped with ViseGrips or some other type of clamp.

Maybe use some small blocks of wood or plastic to avoid stressing the hose with the clamp.

I suppose Nate is right about diesels "flooding".  There've been times when I would try to start mine in severe cold (below 0 degrees F), to no avail.  Coming back to the car during warmer conditions, it would take some cranking, but, it would start to fire, eventually hitting on all five.  HUGE clouds of black/blue smoke billowing for the first few minutes, and, after that, it was fine.

It is likely that by this point you have flooded it ~ yes , Diesels do flood .

Try some spray stuff. You might get it started. And a worn out engine is less likely to have damage done to it by starter fluid. When I bought my 190D it would not start without a shot in the morning and then I could drive it all day. With compression like that your screwed. Max

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Garage Queen 240D Update-Updated

Don   I spotted a MB siting in a repair shop lot. It's been
there for over a year think it may be a parts car.
This car is in Troy Mo. siting on S.Lincoln Dr.

Thanks for the input.  Glow plugs glowed nicely outside the car.  And with the injectors removed, I could view them glowing red while installed.

I ran the compression test – several times to get consistent numbers on all cylinders.  The results are bad, very bad.  Keep in mind this was a cold engine test, given it's pretty difficult to do a warm engine test on a car that will not start.

Cylinder 1 – 220                Cylinder 2 – 180                Cylinder 3 – 210                Cylinder 4 – 310

So guys, what do you things the odds are that a valve job will help this engine?  A complete rebuild is way outside my skill set, and also my budget.  Has my beloved 240D become a parts car?
