[diesel_mercedes] Re : OM61X rockerbox Gaskets

Just use the rubber one , most any brand will be made in Europe , I forget the Mfr's name , RENTZ maybe .

The biggest challenge is getting it to stay put as you wrestle the cover back into place .

I also spend (according to Tom) inordinate amounts of time had cleaning the entire sealing surface of the cylinder head as it's recessed here & there and just *one* bit of Road Grime will cause copious leaks .

Same if you pinch a wire or the tranny's vacuum tube....

Go back and try again ~ once the cover is lain , it must not rock atall before you add the 13MM ATF nuts & waves washers....

Lots of oil. Did I recently see this addressed. Did someone say only use a MB factory gasket or was that another thread. Could not find that message.

[diesel_mercedes] Piston Fitment

As it turns out , they way you fit German pistons is different from how Americans do it :

Americans measure the side clearance between the cylinder wall and the piston as the narrowest point , if within specification , it's good to go , call it a day .

Germans , however , measure every piston in the shop with a micrometer and write it on each piston or in a book then measure the bore and match them up ~ the similar result is much closer the German way and is why these engines (and those VW's 40 years ago) last so long .

Coupled with fabulous piston quality in both materiel and initial manufacture , often the Mercedes pistons are unworn after 1/2 million miles of service .

Sorry Caitlin ;

That one was beginning to look like a paperback book and meandered all over the repairs you're doing , your good attitude and so on...

Sorry .

And again, I say, buy an inventory of euro nuts, bolts, screws, and other cheap little bits so that you don't have to run to the store every time you need #8 whatever. Those things are cheaper than spending $3 of fuel when your car is up on jacks and it is 8:00pm.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Dammit

When I worked in a rebuild shop, we always used the old pistons unless there was damage. New rings, knurled them to hold o1il better, cleaned the carbon out, everything else new - but used the old cleaned up pistons which seemingly were in good shape. Course that was on Ford, Chrysler, & GM engines with lower compression issues.

Not quite a decade ago, I was quoted ~$900 for a set of 5 new pistons.  Fortunately, I didn't need them.  I did have a long conversation with a shop in Belmont, CA, (up on the SF peninsula), about re-sleeving the engine, they'd done several.  Said that you can usually re-use the stock pistons, which I regarded with a bit of suspicion.. Never needed to get the work done, still have a full set of sleeves, though.

Well ;

We sleeved the cylinder block , they're not wet liners so it's a bit complicated .

He hunted around his massive stock and found a nice set of good used std. pistons , they sure are expen$ive ! .

I have decided that it is time to get Nate to the Chiropractor. After reading several of Nate's recent post, it is obvious that his back is aggravating the hell out of him. You can almost feel the pain and aggravation in every post, which is entirely un-Nate like.

Don't do it!!
Chiropractic is absolutely contraindicated for sciatic nerve problems, there is a very real danger of permanent damage to the nerve.
