BERU electronically controlled diesel Instant Start System (ISS)

The BERU Diesel Instant Start System ISS of the second generation with new control unit and additional heating flange brings a further reduction in consumption and emission.

With the BERU Instant Start System, or ISS for short, the diesel engine starts as quickly and reliably as a petrol engine, even at extremely low temperatures. Thanks to performance-optimised glow plugs and an electronic control unit which regulates the glow time and voltage of every single glow plug individually. The ISS contributes to a permanently safe combustion process. It also largely prevents warm-up problems, irregular running of the engine, diesel nailing and excessive vibrations.

The ISS system glow plug optimized for direct injection (right) converts the power absorbed in the head area even more effectively and consumes around half the energy of the standard glow plug (left).

Extremely short heating up time (up to 1,100 °C in 2 seconds!)
Safe start even at temperatures of -25 °C
Electronically controlled pre-heating, intermediate and post-heating

If yours look like Bills, then yes there's a specific method I use :

It takes two pairs of good quality pliers : one a small pair of ' Water pump ' (NE: Channel Lock) to hold the ring just inboard of there the electrical connecting strap goes so it doesn't rotate as you use the second set of pliers to loosen the round outer nut .

I'd wire brush the exposed threads before doing anything else .

It is critical to hold the inner ring/nut thing so neither it nor the electrical connector rotate as you loosen the outer ring/nut .

If it's posible to convert this engine to parallel glow plugs from the current series setup , do so it'll make your life much easier .

I am having issues with GP's right now, and seriously considering upgrading. I like the Mercedes Source Monark
plugs. Ken has some great videos.

Yes they are .

There are kits one can buy that either have adapter bushings or larger threads, look into it and I don't recommend any sort of " quick glow " plug as they always seem to burn out sooner .
