Re: [diesel_mercedes] 190D won't go into first gear

Sounds like it's time for a set of shift bushings and some adjusting.

I have a 1961 190Db that gets used about every five years.
Tired to move it about six months ago and it won't go into first gear; has three on the tree.
It'll go into second, third and reverse, with or without the clutch being pushed; won't go into first.
I jacked one rear wheel off the ground; won't go into first, with or without the clutch being depressed.
Other gears do connect the rear wheel to the motor. I can see the whole linkage that is outside the transmission and it is trying.
Any ideas?  Bill in Oregon

Well, that was it. Thought I had a 3-on-the tree (Chevy ?) and I have 4. Seems to go into all four gears plus reverse. I have a short front brake pipe coming, then I’ll take it around the block. Again, thanks. Bill in Oregon

Bill,

It's been a long time, but there is no way the 190Db has three on the tree. What you have is four on the tree + reverse. First is up toward you, second down, third up and away and fourth down and away.

Hope this helps.

No way, I'm too lazy for that. I just opened the valves on the new calipers and let them gravity feed til they dripped about a pint of fluid total, closed them, pumped the brakes, topped it off and gravity bled them one more time just enough to get a solid drip going. Probably ended up being a flush of the rear brakes. DOT 3 is good enough isn't it?

I just unhook the brake hose and let the fluid drip while I do the job, keep it topped up in the front so it doesn't gulp an air bubble. Probably the same as a flush, or close enough...

RE: [diesel_mercedes] Re: 190D won't go into first gear

Thank you!  A little confusion (mine) goes a long way. I looked in one of my books and I do have a 4-speed. Back to the garage as soon as it lights up. Bill in Oregon

Some say to flush the system before you put the new calipers on, so you don’t push old crud thru your new parts. Bill in Oregon

It now stops well and you got a $50 coupon ? .

I'd say you came out _WAY_ ahead .

I hope you flushed & bled all four wheels until clean brake fluid came out .
