Thank you Mark ;

I'd forgotten all about the importance of 'phasing' multiple speakers....

I looked at the Clarion site and they have a variety of 4 ohm automotive application speakers .

There's a decent size flange so making it hold tightly in place shouldn't be too difficult .

The speaker is now held with just one screw and no buzz/rattles .

I'll have ti hunt up the old original speaker I recently took out of my '84 Coupe and measure it for the proper size then go price these things up .

I wonder if I can manage to squeeze the 5.5" one into my 1969 VW Beetle ? I know good speakers make old tech (this one is a 6 volt antique AM  thing) radios sound pretty good .

I'm hoping to get back to the Beetle this Spring .

Check the ohm rating on that old radio. I know the older Euro radios had some weird ratings.

Clarions were pretty good, but a few things: it needs to snuggle down so it doesn't foul the grill, it needs to be held solidly in place to avoid vibration and it needs to be wired so that the speakers are polarized. That is, + and - need to match. If you are not sure simply reverse one channel's wires and listen for improved bass and separation.

[diesel_mercedes] W123 Power Steering

Thank you kind Sir ;

Even if I could afford a new car I like these better and with all the help I get here I can manage .

This old thing is beginning to look pretty good .

I found my receipt :

power steering pump $30 including core

Cruise Control Amplifier $11.52 no core

Middle seat belt with both side buckles for 1981 300TD (a guy in D.C. needs it so I broke my rule, we'll see if I get paid or not) $10.50 no core

Palomino 'U' shaped plastic bracket thing that holds the net on the back of the front seat $1.29, I have a brandy new netting but managed to break my new M-B Classic Center (!$!) plastic part .

Needless to say I'm well pleased .

A couple years back during the big popularity of these cars I bought a Chinese made all metal 300D radiator, it cost about $200 (ouch) and was worthless having only _two_ rows in it ~ I had the metal tanks soldered on to a three or four row new brass core (MORE $ ) and it's long gone on that car as I sold it at a dead loss when it ceased pleasing me .

Anyway, I found a (IMO) screaming deal on a new Nissens radiator for just around $160.00 and pulled the trigger .

Now it looks like I may not need it but this car already had the inlet neck failure once in....?2004? (I dunno, when I was seeing a Chiropractor for my broken neck) so this new Nissens that supposedly comes with an upper nipple reinforcement should keep me happy .

I'll clean and save the old radiator in the Nissens box in my garage where it'll never be needed again or be needed and I'll discover a mouse too up living in it and the tubes are all clogged with muse poor and shedded hair...... .

Jeezo-Peezo ~ I could have written a good sized book on all the things I've done to these old cars .

O.K., I had a good day out to - day .

Tom came by and picked me up, we headed to Stanton, Ca. (the poor part of Orange County) where I'd located two W123's in different if nearby junkyards .

The first yard's exact year and model car (1981 W123 240D) had only been there 8 days yet it looked like a turkey carcass three days after Thanksgiving.....

Sigh .

Tom found a nice, matching color & upholstery pattern  driver's seat for his W126, I think it was about $65 including the core deposit and the electric motors, they charge separately for seat motors .

It took me a]less than an hour to get it out, shoulda done it in 15 ~ 20 minutes but my broken hand makes things very slow .

Tom had to help me lift the seat out of the car, I thought it weighed 75 #, he said more like 35 but between the two of us it was easy .

Off we went to the second yard where I found several W126's in decent shape, all were gassers though and so used double sheave pulleys, this won't work on a W123 Diesel engine as the Diesel's single sheave alignment is different .

I finally spotted  a lone 1983 300D mostly intact, Pic. 1, I looked in the PS resivoir and the filter was gone missing from when they'd drained it but the fluid residue smelled sweet and was RED as ATF should so I dismounted and bought it, $35. such a deal ~ no warranty of course .

I also bought some seat belts for a guy's 1981 300TD, he's been frantic looking for the middle belt in the rear seat, I found him a nice one .

I also finally figured out how to remove the cruise control amplifier, Brian mentioned _one_ bolt holding it in place a long time ago, it's a 10MM ATF bolt you need to use a 4" extension going over the dash to firewall support on, then it comes right out and drops the C.C. amp. & bracket right in your hand .

I just found a guy who repairs them cheaper than Programma in Florida and does a better job too as he automatically replaces the thirty year old capacitors and they normally don't .

A couple little tidbits like original oil and fuel caps with Mercedes logos and NO RUST, covers for underhood shifting valves and 'Just So' original hardware, clamps and the normal stuff that gets lost or tossed over the decades but makes the car reliable and safer when you drive it daily to the ends of the Earth as I do .

I can't stand up straight but I'm washed and happy, I hope to get this  pump cleaned up and installed to - morrow after my fun & pain filled O.T. session .

I'm sure there are many details I forgot but I'm blotto after this long hard day .

Getting the forward clip of the plastic grille back into it's hole was really tough, I was using a small crowbar to hold it down as I installed the single screw, that corner kept popping up a little bit until I broke the hooked tab _off_ then it stood proud of the dash by about 9MM *~X( at wits' end .

The original screw was gone missing and I found the correct one that's hidden when it's installed in a junked car ~ I'm trying hard to fix all the various little niggly things in this car .

?Does anyone know how good these speakers actually are ? .

This one is slightly smaller that the original one, maybe I can find the same dual coil/cone thing in the exact size and get better sound......

I hate to go away from stock but if it sounds better I'll do it .

I know I posted some pictures of P.S. this & that, I'm pretty sure I posted what it looks like when you've cleaned everything : early typ P.S. fluid filter (Pic. #1)

Resivoir full and ready to go (Pic. #2)

Resivoir after less than 100 miles, lots of careful lock to lock turns to make sure I'm circulating the fluid into every crevice of the steering box (Pic. #3) notice it's not very translucent anymore .

So, I still have more flushing to do before I swap out this weeping power steering pump .

On a happier note (?) as I was adjusting the engine's hot idle speed I noticed a drop of coolant on the bell housing behind the engine, running my hands on the single engine to firewall heater hose revealed a bump in the _underside_ of the hose, of course as soon as I touched it the bump burst and began leaking coolant merrily . now I know where all that darn coolant was going .

Of course, the only new factory German heater hose is in Germany , Tom at The M-B Classic Center is getting it for me, I'm off to look for a good used one to - morrow morning, I hope the rain has quit by then .

A trip to a local parts house might yield a hose with some of the correct bends and ends. I have made special hoses from bypass hoses found in inventory there several times. Imagine trying to find heater hoses for a 1968 Citroen ID! It may take some trimming and joining to make one, but I cannot imagine an NOS hose from Germany being much better that what you already have. Take your old one in and match it up.

In my haste I ordered up a new (!$!) Nissens brand made in Denmark radiator, it's now cheaper than the Chinese made ones, UPS told me this morning they'd hold it for pickup down town but @ 5:45PM sent me a message saying it's sitting on my porch, here I am far from there and -not- going to fetch it until to - morrow morning early *X( angry .

The fun never really quits but I'm looking forward to driving this car to Death Valley around the end of the month .

Stay tuned, more of Nate's endless foolishness soon .
