Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Our Vanishing American Carscape

Chip,

In 57,  Ford outsold Chevy.

All cars of that era are susceptible to rust.

The wannabe hot rodders were able to get high performance Chevy's and their parts at the junkyard so the Chevys got more popular.

Mostly they use the 327 and 350, but you are correct that the 265 and 283 were correct for the 55 and 56 Chevy.

If you go to car shows or watch the auctions on TV, you will see 55 to 57 Fords.

By now you have probably guessed that I am partial to the 57 Ford - I had a white convertible.

I don't think Edsel came along until 1958, so that would have not impacted the 1955-1957 Fords.

I have been told that rust was a real problem during those years for Ford and that could account for the scarcity of these cars. Maybe Chevy just looked that much better and the 265 and 283 were that much better than the Y block 292 and 312. But I think won some NASCAR titles during this model run also....

It's just always been curious to me.

[diesel_mercedes] Hey Tony re: your cruise control box WAS Re: 300D electrical gremlins

Jim, is the actuator a difficult maintenance item? I can have it apart and take a look see if it aint too complex. The CC was working again yesterday, so am thinking there is something intermittent either in the harness connections, or in the actuator or amp box.
Have one month left in Mexico, then a few weeks in Yuma then a mad dash to home. Sure be nice to have it sorted.

I wouldn't put another amp box in it unless/until I made sure I had a good actuator motor. I have used gdl-online.com for overhaul with great success.

[diesel_mercedes] Hey Tony re: your cruise control box WAS Re: 300D electrical gremlins

If the cruise control actuator motor is bad, it will burn out the amp box. The cruise control motor is the thingy under the hood connected to throttle linkage. I wouldn't put another amp box in it unless/until I made sure I had a good actuator motor. I have used gdl-online.com for overhaul with great success.
