Re: [diesel_mercedes] Looking to buy used copy of Kent's book

Well, Kent's got a business going there.  He may not be Willard M. Romney, but he seems to have been a success, and to have provided a lot of people with a lot of useful help in getting their cars sorted out.

I'm not lining up to buy any such book.  But I certainly wouldn't question anyone else's approach to trying to learn as much as they can about these great cars.

The Classic Center sells the shop manual CDs and the needed parts.  Yeah, that IS convenient.  Keep up the good work, Kent.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] '81 240D wildly fluctuating fuel gauge

Brian,

The oil pressure gauge is mechanical, I believe, just a tube from the engine to the dash binnacle.  So no electrical issues.

The symptoms you describe are CLASSIC electrical connection issues.  Since they appear to affect more than one gauge, the problem is likely to be the common ground connection for the binnacle, rather than the individual feeds to the gauges.  (Although, a fault affecting all the power to the gauges MIGHT also explain the symptoms.)

Check the binnacle ground connection.  Check not only the wire connection, but the base of the pin to which ground connects.  The binnacle has a printed circuit on the back, and the pin connects to this.  Vibration or pulling wrong when removing the binnacle might disrupt the pin-printed circuit connection.  Such a problem might appear only as a tiny crack in the circuit trace, and a crack that can be intermittent, thus causing your problem.

This is not uncommon in any circuit that is subject to physical activity.  Examining the circuit traces and connections in VERY GOOD light is important.

IF you find a circuit discontinuity, it should be easy to handle with a dab of solder.  If you don't feel up to that task yourself, you are more likely to get quality work at an electronics service shop than at a car repair shop.

Is this a common situation, and is there a fix?  I can estimate fuel usage as long as the odometer is working, but it would be nice to have a steady fuel gauge.

By the way, I got 28.5 mpg on the tank I filled today.  Not bad for around-town driving.

Thanks in advance for the feedback.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: this could be a bargain too

Just got home from a day at Nate's, watching work on the Chevy truck and NOT getting to the parts yard for necessary parts.

Tooled into Brentwood Conserv Fuel with 413.3 miles on the odo.  Slurped up 15.241 gallons of fuel = 27.12 mpg.  Not entirely bad for a 31 year old car, hauling around way more weight than the average.

Since recently replacing the instrument cluster in my '81 240D so that I would have the amazing luxury of a working odometer, I have a bizarre fuel gauge.  It flits around quite a bit, and sometimes flies back and forth from full to empty and back.  Sometimes the movement is less pronounced, say from full to 3/4.  This movement is not constant - sometimes the gauge is just fine.  The temp gauge also fluctuates sometimes, but not nearly as much.  The oil pressure gauge is rock steady all the time.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Beggar Warning

I work downtown where there are a fair number of people on the corners asking for handouts, that I run into on the way to/from the bus stop. I keep a few granola bars in my jacket pocket.

I used to offer them to anyone asking for any handout, and got turned down half the time, often with either a disappointed look or a sheepish grin.

I figure those are the free-loaders. I really can't tell from appearance. One guy looked pretty legitimate, then I saw him a few minutes later talking on his cell phone and sipping a Starbucks coffee while he handed off his cardboard sign to a friend.

I changed my tactic. Now, if they ask for money, I say no. If they ask for "anything would help", I offer a granola bar. Haven't been turned down yet, and usually get an eager and/or grateful response. So at least in my area, people asking for "anything" seem a lot more legitimate than the ones asking for money.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Beggar Warning

Here in LA, we have people who bus carloads of people to locations, give them their signs, and pick them up at the end of the day. Don't know how they split the take, but I'm not sure they spend it on illicit consumption. It is just another minimum wage kind of a job, mostly men. One guy with 1/2 a foot used to do quite well. Some ladies with small kids are working our post office and local markets, they also do quite well. It oays to know where your local Salvation Army or friendly church is so you can give them directions. Most are not too interested. You can also volunteer to go to McDonalds and pick them up a meal. Again, not many are interested as they bring food from home in backpacks which are tucked out of view - or, I have seen their drop off drivers bringing lunch to them which they eat a block or two away from their pan handling site.

The gas can trick worked with me, I hate to admit it. the kid said he needed some gas to get to work and he even had the plastic jerry can in his hand. I give a bit to the guys who stand on the traffic  islands with a  sign. I figure that it they are that desperate, I'll risk being a fool - usually it is just a couple of dollars. It could be me in the future.

What really irritates me are the established charities that consume 50% of donations on administration and/or pay the  CEOs  millions of dollars. When they phone solicit, a always ask what the CEO makes.

Ben,  That is exactly the guilt trip that the scammers are playing
into.  Several researchers have checked into beggars and many of them
are using it as a well paid job.  If I can find one, I will post an
URL.  I have also personally guestioned what to do.  Some of the
storys are really good.  Surely some of them must be truthful people
in a desperate situation.  But after seeing the research, I concluded
that many of them are scammers and all I would be doing is supporting
a drug or alcohol addiction.  Bobby
