[diesel_mercedes] Re: What to do before Road Trip?

Me too! I am going in the reverse direction soon in my 240 4-spd. Hey you guys come fix up my car for me so it wont break down. Hey Mary, coming from the south, past Bend a ways there is a rest stop on the left side with a 300 ft. drop off to a river. It's really cool because you can walk right up to it. Watch the doggy close tho. Do you know about Stonehenge? It's right across from Biggs Junction. Hwy 97.Maryhill Museum left and Stonehenge to the right. You should drive right tru there as it's on the road to Chelan on Hwy. 97 which is a really senic drive. Stonehenge is a great place for a picnic lunch with really good views up there. Hey maybe we will pass on the road. Max

Perhaps we should take pics of the Mercedes at each stopping point? I just love this car:)

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Whoops- different trannys

I pulled my drive shaft last week to replace the support bearing, but I disconnected it at the rubber flex disk (AKA guibo connector) so I don't know what the transmission output shaft looks like but I'd imagine the shaft is splined and that is what Mike is referring to as "spindles".

I haven't taken the torque converter off yet, so thanks for the heads up on that. I finished pulling the first tranny last night and seem to remember that the output shaft of the transmission had spindles- but now that I'm thinking on it more- I only took one look and it was late and I had to pack up and go. Now all of a sudden I'm thinking the torque converter stayed on the flywheel on the first transmission, and stayed with the tranny on the second transmission, so that looking quickly one would looked spindled, or geared, and the other because of the torque converter, just have the nub that fits into the flywheel. Ok then- I'm back on track. Feeling just a little dumb. You all can erase this post if you like, but if it's still up and all goes well tomorrow I'll confirm.
Thanks
Mike

In reality I've let them slip off a time or two and no obvious adverse consequences. Also, I don't know what you mean by "spindles" vs. "smooth nub". Which end of the tranny are you referring to by that. The output shaft should have one of those round rubber guibo connectors. Can you be more specific.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: What to do before Road Trip?

Thanks Mark and Brian. I am mostly raised in Oregon, so I know about the I-5 speed traps. Unfortunately, I am running only regular diesel at the moment but eventually hope to add a WVO system as diesel prices are insane right now. Hubby is a disability due to brain surgery a few months ago and both of us are contractors, so we figured we may as well hit the road while he has "paid vacation" in the form of disability. His disability involves his vision, so I will be doing all the driving. Other than that, he is fine and can enjoy the trip. He can walk & talk, just not drive.

Our dog, Levi will be riding in the backseat the whole way (with his doggy seat belt on for safety. He is a German breed, hence he prefers the Mercedes (not kidding). We actually are going to pay off our Toyota Rav4 next year, then replace it with a W123 wagon. Can't wait to do that.

We are considering eventually relocating to Bend, so we can check that out (I know the area, Hubby does not) on the way up. Then on to a friend's house in Chelan, followed by Portland to visit my daughter & Son-in-law, then back to the Bay area. Should be a fun trip. Perhaps we should take pics of the Mercedes at each stopping point? I just love this car:)

This is approx 1600 miles round trip. The 300D is in great shape, fairly low miles but not sure since odometer works ONLY intermittantly, newer rebuilt engine and rebuilt AT plus many rubber hose replacements about 1.5 years ago. New tires, runs great, regular oil changes, etc. Hubby isn't mechanically inclined and has no tools, so we need to bring it to our diesel head guy who knows old Mercedes. What do I need to have done prior to the trip aside from an oil/fuel filter perhaps air filter change & valve adjustment? This should be fun, as I love driving this car and get to visit friends and my daughter on the trip. Just wanna make sure the 300D is in tip top shape rior to leaving. Please advise. Thanks in advance!

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Sagging Rear End

Brian,

Sounds like I am wrong.  Both you and Nate have had the contrary experience.

Bobby,

I know that.  When I bought my 300SD, it looked like it had been lowered it sat so low, but since I'd seen this problem before, I bought it a new set of Bilstiens, and it went right back up where it belonged.  In fact, it went up so far it topped out the suspension, was several weeks before it settled down where it belongs.

Gas shocks have their own spring rate, and it adds to the spring rate of the springs, if they loose pressure, the car gets lower and softer, usually asymmetrically..

BK,

There are air shocks that help lift the car.

Gas shocks are pressurized, but merely to reduce foaming of the hydraulic fluid.  They are usually higher quality than the non-gas shocks in a manufacturer line.  So, if they lose pressure, they may not be as good a shock, but would not cause that corner to below.

I think.

I think it may depend on what kind of shocks are fitted.  Gas shocks that lose pressure at one corner will do what you describe.

Weak spring .These cars have the weakest springs, they need a muscle car spring to replace.

With Spring trying to make an appearance here in the Heartland, the wife has been 'encouraging' me to pull her 1980 300D out of winter storage.   So this past weekend, I open the garage door and notice the right rear is a little low.  My first thought was a low tire, which there was, but even when all tire are properly inflated the passenger side rear is one-half inch lower than the driver side.  Now that doesn't sound like much, but it is quite noticeable.  A peek under the car didn't reveal any obvious problems.  Does this sound like a weak shock or spring?

Re: [diesel_mercedes] What to do before Road Trip?

That is a great trip Mary. I took our newly purchased 1983 w123 from LA to Tacoma and on to Nanaimo BC and then back down the 101. The previous owner kept it in good shape so I just got in and drove. No problems at all, so I decided to keep it rather than yank the engine (for my other w123). When I got back I put a new axle in, but probably could have just rebooted it. Watch out for some Oregon speed traps on the #5.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Gasket for thermostat

The O-ring is for the thermostat and cover fitting, and the gasket is
for the whole housing, where it meets the head.
